  • Engine problems - useful article.

    There's a useful article, "BMW/PSA 1.4 & 1.6 engines - loads of problems" on L'Argus's website:

    http://www.largus.fr/actualite-autom...e-2319369.html

For the benefit of the non-Francophones among us, I've summarised the main points. Note that references to payment of repair costs apply to PSA in France, not necessarily Citroen UK. "Not relevant" refers to problems detected before DS3 production started.

    "1. Valve gear

Loss of power, illumination of warning light with fault code P2191, 1.6 thp150/156/175/200 up to 30 March 2011

Problem related to elongation of the timing chain because of faulty tensioner, slipped timing & sensitivity of diagnostic computer.

Up to 15 July 2009 (date of introduction of new tensioner):

Elongation of timing chain less than 68mm, reset timing. Greater elongation, replace complete timing drive – chain, tensioner camshaft pulley screw, upper guide . . .)

In both cases the operations are accompanied by an update of the ECU software.

    19 July 2009 to 30 Sept 2010:

    Check timing & update ECU.

    30 Sept 2010 to 30 Mar 2011.

    Reprogram ECU software.

PSA will pay 100% of costs (for cars made up to) up to 30 Sep 2010 with a 60 month/100,000km limit.

    2. Tensioner.

    (First paragraph not relevant)

Oil leak from tensioner area due to incorrect fastening Vti/THP between 1 April 2010 & 3 August 2011.

Retighten tensioner, if necessary change gasket or replace tensioner

    3. Cylinder head.

Sudden loss of power, with or without illumination of warning light, THP up to 2 Jan 2011.

Sooting-up of cylinder head following coking of oil in contact with ethanol in unleaded 95/E10 petrol. Cylinder head requires cleaning.
From Jan 2011 PSA specifies full- rather than semi-synthetic oil.

PSA will pay 100% of repair costs for vehicles up to 2 Jan 2011, with 60 month/75,000 km limit.

    4. Water Pump.

    Not relevant.

    5. Valve lift actuator.

Loss of power, motor not starting (Vti)

    Reprogram or replace actuator.

    6. Injection pump.

    Not relevant.

    7. Spark Plugs.

    Not relevant.

    8. coils packs.

    Not relevant.

    9. Turbo.

    First paragraph not relevant.

Illumination of warning light, loss of power at full boost (THP156/200).

    Replace electric pressure control valve.

    10. Catalytic converter.

Illumination of warning light with no loss of power & rattling noise. (Vti)

Cat. failure due to faulty units from supplier.

PSA will undertake repairs on older (pre-DS3) units. The problem persists on later models but no payment for repairs.

    One final note:

    Pay attention to oil level:

Mini owners are advised to check oil level regularly as numerous cases of engine failure have occurred due to insufficient oil.

PSA fits an oil level sensor . . . ""
