  • oil consumption and level on the Eco-diesel

    Hi,
sorry I’m really more of an interloper here as my wife has a 2012 DS3 1.6 Eco-diesel as a loan car which she very much likes

but it didn’t come with an Owner’s Manual and I’ve not been able to view or download one from the web

I have a couple of points (not moans) so I’ve started separate threads for each, this one -

what is the usual oil composition and how much oil does it take to fill from the minimum to maximum on the dipstick please?

after a very hurried changeover of loan cars I check the oil level (cold engine) and it was at the bottom of the dipstick – the car has done 8k-miles in 8 months from new

after getting permission from the loan company my wife added 300ml of oil whilst on route to an overnight stop over, when I check the oil level (both from warm and cold) on her return the level was still well down so I ended up adding the other 700ml – so a litre added and the oil level on the dipstick was still only between half and three-quarters

If you are at half to three quarters then you are fine, to over fill does more damage then to under fill.

      cheers

I agree it's better to be a bit under than over - although two things you can guarantee from a garage is they overfilled the engine oil and over inflated the tyres - I was concerned that 1 litre only took it to below three-quarters on the dipstick (I've yet to read the Owner's Manual but at first glance it doesn't look as comprehensive as I thought it might be but as I put I've yet to read it)

I'm fussy on oil levels as for the last 20+ years I've run '60s & '70s classic cars for daily use and some modern cars where some can use a bit of oil in careless owners hands

I've checked the Owner's Manual and it shows engine oil capacity with filter as 3.75 litres so to add 1 litre, about a third of the engine's capacity, if the filter takes say 0.5 and still be below three-quarters on the dipstick suggests the engine was low on oil

the Owner's Manual has that the engines do use oil and to check around every 3,000 miles, so as the car was new 8 months ago and has done 8k miles it suggests it has been neglected or ignored (it is a loan car)

might be something for other owners to keep an eye on though

If you never check your oil you deserve to blow your engine up.

modern drivers in modern cars do expect the car to let them know and to be fair there are warning and conformation messages on the dash dials

more important to check the brakes (fluid reservoir) but again there are warning and check lights

you'd be surprised at how many driver's don't know how to check the oil level or even add oil properly - ("I need a 710 cap")

bit harsh but it might be the only way some will learn

but even the very best make mistakes sometimes but visual checks brake brake fluid and engine oil are very quick and easy so not much excuse to be missed

It can be an eye opener to how many folks don't know or understand the basic checks that should be done on a car. The problem is more to do with the technology and the attitude that the car must have a light.

One I do as a matter of habit is explain what this light REALLY means*

It's amazing how many people get this one wrong!

Lol! Think I'll use this as a filter to new car ownership....

"Dear Mr Customer do you know how to check your oil? No you say, well I'm sorry you don't qualify for a new car then."

well I'm a very old f*rt so I reckon once you've passed your driving test you should learn to drive in an old banger from 30-45 years ago so you learn not only how to drive but how to look after the car rather than the excellent modern cars bought by mummy, daddy or self where almost everything is done for you and stops some from needing to think for themselves

I do remember a certain local Government buying a load of helicopters and not being able to use them because they didn't also buy the computer programs needed to fly them - or so it it was reported as such

my everyday car is 40 years old and all the electronic driver aids are in the nut behind the steering wheel, there are gauges that tell you if it's running as normal for that particular car if you know where they usually show or flicker around

always remember to make brake fluid first in your mind, then I say washer fluid (important to be able to see when driving) and I'd put coolant before oil but check them all

I think all drivers regardless of age or sex should know what these checks are for and do them - my wife knows a bit more too but she's clever she gets me to do all to save her getting dirty and "because it's (my) job to do it"
