    I'd honestly forgotten which helicopter and I can't see yours with my poor eyes on the monitor screen I've got (I can now you've said of course)

    we sometimes get Chinook fly over our home and they always seem to make a frightening noise to me sort of alien, menacing, military end of the world type thing especially as there are usually two close together

      Doesn't the diesel DS3 have an oil level indicator? At the start it displays OIL OK or if not the level and eventually warning.

        Yes it does, very time the car starts it does an oil check but it is no substitute for checking yourself from time to time.

          quite so

          I'd add - when you do your first thought should be checking not the oil but brakes, a quick look at the brake reservoir for the level and colour of the fluid

          the Owner's Manual has that the engines do use oil and to check around every 3,000 miles (personally I'd always also check before a very long journey or going away on holiday in the car)

          I'm not saying the engine is unimportant but is relatively so compared to the more important systems and items - number one always is brakes, then tyres (wheels), steering, suspension, lights, windows and mirrors - think about it apart from emissions there's not much tested on the engine in an MoT

          the biggest influence on the car of course is the person that's going to drive it - even down to if they look for or notice warning lights

            It's a low oil level warning - sort of a last resort & no substitute for regular checking.

                in the old days, last century, indeed last millennium, oil warning lights use to have the bulbs to them removed to save worrying the owners and cars that had oil pressure gauges had the oil pressure gauges removed on later models as owners misunderstood or were too worried about what the oil pressure should be

                in those times most drivers understood that the oil level was checked with the dipstick

                I remember when I got a (MK2) Mazda MX-5 pleased to see how quickly the oil pressure gauge went to its normally setting and how rock steady it was, I then found out it wasn't a true dial gauge more or a yes/no reading, I should have known better but I didn't as I expected everything to work exactly spot on as they did at that time on a Japanese car as they were the most reliable cars (and probably still are) before advertising and owners of German cars put up the illusion of German cars (absolute) build quality and reliability
