Auto Headlights question

I think this might be a stupid question but am going to ask anyway...
Automatic headlights, is that an all or nothing thing? what I mean is when they activate they do both sidelights and dipped beam, not sidelights and then headlights when they thin it is darker?

I notice they are coming on when it isn't really that dark and just wondering if they are a too bright for the UK roads or whether i shouldn't worry about it

Wouldn't worry about it. Let them turn on and off at will and do not give it a second thought. Do not think I have touched the switch in 2 years.

Yeah when they activate on auto they go from DRLs to main beam/sidelights, they don't turn on in stages
