  • 1.6 E-HDI Airdream - preventative maintenance/what to watch out for under warranty?

    Hi all,

So i'd like to get a list here of preventative maintenance self services that we can do to keep our engines running as healthy as possible, and if possible if anyone can highlight particular issues to look out for and bearing in mind possible warranty claims.

So are there any butterfly valves we should keep clean anywhere?
Should we clean the EGR for example?
Specific oil grade from citroen? ACEA C1/2? Which viscocity and fully synthetic/semi synthetic?
    Should we clean the MAF?

Now I've read a little about exhaust backbox's corroding pretty quick, i'm hoping to get a good few years out of this motor so the best way to get to know it is going to be jobs like these .

Really appreciate anyone's input here and perhaps I can make a more structured topic.

In particular this is regarding the DV6DTED engine which I believe runs a waste gated TD025-49173 running just under a whole 1 bar of pressure, if anyone can suggest otherwise it would be appreciated. I guess most DV6 based engines face the same problems though .

Not sure if this is a wind up??

Dont tinker with the MAF, EGR while under warranty ....... Drive it, get it serviced and most of all enjoy it.

Of course its not a wind up, these engines are pretty sensitive to oil/coke build up and if cleaning out the EGR prevents it i'd rather do that than outright have it replaced. . I know lots of people don't advise cleaning MAF's, but I have done it previously on an old 1.7 Puma and it made the world of differences.

One question I do have... is should I have anything in my spare wheel well (not a wheel I know) but perhaps an air compressor/other tools because it seems pretty empty and the dealer said they would of checked if it needed anything and replaced it before I picked it up. Wondering it it was overlooked!

Yeah if your DS3 didn't come with a spare when new (I'm pretty sure it didn't) you should have an orange compressor (rectangular about 30cm long) which contains a can of tyre goo to 'repair' and inflate small punctures.

If you don't have that I guess a previous owner removed it and then didn't replace it. Have a word with your dealer as you'll need that as a minimum

Right, i'll make sure to mention this to the dealer... how about a jack? I'm not even sure there is a brace in the back!

Shame its not a Citroen dealer .

Today the drivers side front wheel appeared to be totally flat and a quick pressure test confirmed it , blew it back up and the steering was driving true and straight when let go hands free rather than pulling to the right. I can't physically see any damage to the tyre at the moment but a whole 5 days since receiving the car from the dealer after they refurbed the wheels before I noticed this today. Wondering whether they've not put the wheel on correctly! Also noticed a chunk out of the passenger front sidewall.

The discs appear to be constantly catching against the breaks even after a few hundred miles since its been standing and that lip around the edge where the pad has worn in is annoying me.

Now... I'm not sure whether the car should make a small amount of whine as it accelerates up to speed... if its a normal whine or a potential gearbox bearing or such . Anyone else note a whine whilst accelerating and is it normal for this engine and 5 speed box?

I'm a little paranoid after shelling out so much and would like to get it into its correct state! .

DS3s without a spare wheel don't come with a jack either, I don't think my first one had the wheel brace either.... From memory all that comes with the spare wheel kit you can purchase from Citroen, eBay etc...

One mans whine is another mans normal..... You need another owner to take a listen or the garage you bought it from to confirm that issue or put your mind at rest.

All discs develop a lip on the outer edge to a greater or lesser degree depending on how old they are. Im convinced that modern discs are made of a softer steel as they seem to wear far faster these days. Some garages have a machine that grinds the lip off the disc without removing it from the car.

An Audi main dealer i bought a previous A3 from had a mark removed from an alloy wheel and wrecked the bead o the tyre in the process, so its not beyond the realms of possibility.

If you are anxious about the car, try to meet up with another owner and compare. It may highlight an issue or put your mind to rest.

Well I used the soapy water method on the tyre and located a puncture that looks fairly repairable so first thing tomorrow its getting done. Then a phone call to see if they'll get me a compressor kit sorted out . I have a towing eye but yeah I think the spare weel kit might be on the future purchases!

Discs are made of cast iron, not steel. The problem isn't the discs, it's the pads. Modern (from the 1980s on) non-asbestos friction materials are more aggressive than their asbestos-based predecessors, resulting in increased disc wear.
