  • Car jacking and axle stand points

Had a play today with a trolley jack and axle stands- also searched the forum and web for info on where the axle stands are placed when the cars jacked up.

The jack point is indicated by an indentation about a foot back for each wheel, and that's where the standard jack goes (For changing wheel etc)
So- using a trolley jack with a bit of wood on the contact point to even the load, jacked one side of car up. Also chocked the wheels and handbrake on!

When the car is raised, any idea where the axles stands go?

On utube it suggests place them either side of the jack point on the sill area toward the centre of the car. Not sure thats correct for the DS3, but placed them there anyway. Didnt take the load off the jack, but if something had happened the axle stands should have held (I hope LOL)

There were a few struts I though of using as axle stand points, but cant find confirmation. Not sure of the strongest points on the chassis

    Any help and advice appreciated

I would guess at the front it would be the rear of the wishbone base behind the front wheel. at the rear you could use base of the spring where it locates. this will move the rear wheel up but not necessarily the car, its good for quick wheel changes, but not if your wanting to work underneath., then id use a set of ramps instead.

Will get a few piccies next time its up to get opinion on best point

Is it safe to leave car jacked on a trolley jack, with axles stands placed, but not in contact with underside?

Sorry for not knowing the name of the part, but I always put supports under the thick metallic-plate-kinda-bar below engine / behind front wheels.

Ah right- that looks good Rag
On the web it says jack the car up at the jacking point (Nr the sill) and then place axle stand next to it- but you cant get the axle stand nr the jacking point....as the jacks there

Ok here is my input as a DIY car tinkerer

Anytime I work on ANY car i use ramps OR axle stands.
now with ramps im finding new cars do not run up the ramps the same as the front Defuser or skirt usualy rubs against the ramps so i use as cyclone says use a board or what i sometimes use is 3-4 bricks as a run on at the bottom of the ramp.

Jacking car up @ front with trolly jack
I always jack the front of the car using somewhere on the front subframe either from side or from front entry of the car

                Axle stands
1 thing that has ALWAYS stuck in my mind was in the early years with cars if you used a trolly jack on the jacking points it would /could damage the jacking point itself rendering the jacking point useless if you had a puncture on the motorway, so for this reason i NEVER jack any car up on the jacking point with a trolly jack.
When i do jack the car up i always place the axle stands either on the front subframe of the car nearest to the wishbones (the subframe is the big flat metal bit between the wishbones)

                Axle stands rear
i always place axle stand on the main rear crossmember as near to suspension as possible

What do i do if car is too low for trolly jack?
i use original jack on original jacking point ONLY to lift the car just to get trolly jack in

                Extra Safety Tip

ALWAYS CHOCK REAR WHEELS WHEN JACKING UP FRONT
                &
ALWAYS CHOCK FRONT WHEELS WHEN JACKING UP REAR

This is only MY method when working on cars
                hope this helps

ALWAYS chris every safety precaution is usefull as long as it doesn't interfere with access to what you want to do

You can't argue with those chocks at that price, the Halfords page says suitable for 16" wheels, I assume no issues with the 17"'s on the DS3 ?

Ive got one set of chocs just like that- but will buy another set as don't see why they only provide one pair in the trolley jack kit
Before I read the instructions, assumed one went behind each wheel
Then read instructions to say you put both on one wheel. Think I will get the other wheel on same axle covered too
                        Nice one Toxic

The DS4 comes with chocks as standard but are expensive in comparison.
