foam inside air box

today I fitted a new air filter and inside the air box was a piece of foam !!!!
what does it do??
also can I remove it ???

I may be wrong but I think it's there to pick up any bits of oil cack that accumulates in the airbox?

Are you sure what you're referring to isn't actually the air filter? Could you take a pic of it?

I would imagine that the foam is just part of the protection for transit, the element is quite fragile.

The standard air filter in my 110 hdi has a layer of foam on top of the paper part of the air filter; i assumed it was part of the filter it's self?

As far as I know, there should only be a paper airfilter in the box

No its not the paper air filter !!!! with the filter removed from the air box on my ds3 there is a cube of white foam mounted in the left hand corner of the box held into place with a screw !
