  • Service question

Hi all, I do 35k miles a year and just had my 37,500 service done today. Asked what the next two services would cost. Was told the 50k would cost £235 which would include brake fluid change, cabin filter, air filter and fuel filter. 62.5k £130

according to my service book the fuel filter should of been done today at the 37,500 service and does the brake fluid need to be done on mileage or time. Plus when must the other filters be changed.

    Thanks
    Steve

Brake fluid is normally done at every second service so it should have been done at the 25k service for you. Did the service team give you a print out of the services for your records as this would list the jobs required.

      Hi Bigfeet,

They only give you a simple traffic light check sheet, not giving any detail.

Sorry what I meant was that the system can print out a full service quotation which lists all the jobs involved.

Really? Why such a low timescale/Mileage? All cars I've owned previous have been brake fluid roughly 72k miles/5 years.

I'm sure it will be for our safety (dealer profit ) etc

Brake fluid is hydroscopic and absorbs moisture over a period of time which is why it's recommended to have it changed every 2 years, it more of a safety advice than a dealer profit thing. Also it's partly related to the warranty, if you have issue with the system I dear say Citroen will want to see evidence that the braking system has been maintained correctly.

To be honest with you a brake fluid change is not expensive and worth doing in my mind. I have my Picasso done every year when it is serviced.

I dread to think of how many people out there are running around on ten year old fluid!

Yep I think Citroen is afraid of brake problems and so the fluid is supposed to have changed every 2 years or 2 services. For me it's 2 years. With my previous japanese car the service didn't include a brake fluid change until 5 years or 100 000 km. And even then the dealer said naah you don't need it. But I said it's part of the manufacturer's service program so do it. Cost is about 50 eur including labor.

Joking aside brakes are pretty fundamental to the car's safety so I'm happy to have the fluid changed

I'm guessing that, if you were unfortunate enough to be involved in an accident and your insurance company were to find out that the brakes had not been maintained to the letter of the manufacturer's schedules, there may be a problem!

You can upgrade on a brake fluid change to a better product so ive been told
Will ask them if I can do that and cover the cost when my time is up
                      Maybe upgrade the hoses too

As with engine oils there are now synthetic brake fluids available. The advantages of these are higher temperature tolerances resulting in reduced degradation of the fluid as it doesn't boil off leading to reduced braking performance.

Yes- that's what I was told. Change to grooved and slotted brake discs, upgrade the fluid and pipework if you want, and hopefully those brakes wont go to sponge when belting it round the track lol

Yep did that to my Renault Megane, drilled and grooved discs, pads to match and steel braided hoses throughout. Exactly as I did on all my bikes, never underestimate the value of good brakes.
