  • Engine Fault Error, Eco Mode & Stop/Start not Working DS3 DSport 110 eHdi Plus

So the other day went to start the car after being out for a run and we hear a beep and the engine fault error comes on the screen. Eco Mode graphic shows on the dash until you turn the ignition to start the car then it goes out and the Stop/Start doesn't work. Service light is now on permanently. Apart from that the car runs fine so I figure this is not actually a mechanical fault and more to do with perhaps a sensor not working etc? Anyone else come across this problem?

Car is just coming up to 18 months old with 23k on the clock. Not really had any major issues up to now.

Hows the battery seem? Sounds like it could be a low voltage detected? But usually you would notice a sluggish start and possible battery light...

Battery is fine. Always starts first time, never any problems in that regard. ESP doesn't work either. If you press the button to turn it on, the light on the dash comes on for a short while then goes off.

Can't explain the beep, but there may not be a fault. If the service light (spanner) is on permanently it's an indication that the there's less than 600 miles to the next service.

Eco mode will come on if it's done a lot of startups without a decent run, to ensure that the battery has enough charge left to start the engine - my car hasn't got stop/start, but I'd assume it's disabled for the same reason.

No it's not the spanner symbol that usually comes on near a service. It actually says SERVICE on the dash and I get the error every time I switch on the ignition. It beeps, says engine fault, repair and the Eco graphic on the dash goes out. The car is used every day for short and long trips and everything else works fine. Car pulls well, not misfiring or lacking in power etc. All electrics apart from that mentioned are working well.

It's actually 1300 miles from it's next service. I would take it in to the dealers but it's our only transport at the moment and the dealer is 15 miles away plus if it's something not covered by warranty I'll need to wait for the next pay check before we can afford to get it seen to. Absolutely hate having to take the car into the dealers. They are not only expensive but completely useless, at least the ones near us are

Are there any fault codes on the display ? You can press the menu button on the stereo and then use the buttons to get to diagnosis (or something like that) when you press to enter that menu it should tell you any fault codes or error messages

No it just repeats the same thing. Engine Fault. Repair. Lot of use diagnostics are when they don't actually "diagnose" anything! Another useless gimmick I think

I know you said your dealer was useless but I think this sounds like a dealer repair to me

Is your service due pcmac? Could plug in a fault code tool if you know someone who's got one
Or a phone with torque pro (May be others available) as that can read fault codes.. and clear them

There is most likely a voltage error in the car. Best to get it checked out as soon as possible.

By the way the ESP is always on, pressing the button turns it off hence the warning light. The system rearms automatically if you drive over 28mph.

Thanks for the info about the ESP. At least that is something that is working then I'll do a few checks on the electrics but as long as the car is working I can wait another month until it goes in for it's service.

If the "service" light is coming on the ECU has detected a fault; get the codes read & all will be revealed!

Well I now have the engine autodiagnosis lamp permanently on. It may have been on before of course but yesterday was driving along a dual carriageway, doing about 55, went to accelerate and nothing happened. Car didn't slow down but would not accelerate. Seems ok now but the light is still on. This is in addition to the SERVICE light being on and ECO mode not working.

Yeah I know, it needs to go to the dealer but will be going in for it's second service at the end of the month.

Thing is, same happened with our C4 so definitely not impressed that the same is happening again.

Coupled with the disappointing finish & very misleading mpg figures and I'm thinking our next car won't be a Citroen. Have had many in the past but I think enough is enough.

I assume these problems will be covered under warranty?

All those warnings you are getting are clear indications that something's wrong. It needs to be looked at NOW!

As for "misleading" MPG figures, you can't blame Citroen for that. All manufacturers are forced to publish figures obtained from a totally unrepresentative EC test procedure; if you want to see just how bad the EC figures are, find a car that's sold in the same spec in Europe & the USA & compare the EC consumption figures with the EPA figures.
