  • Loud clunk whenever pulling away

    Hello all,

So I've got a 63 plate Red edition and whenever I pull off from having the handbrake engaged for a few hours, I get a loud clunk which sometimes you can feel too.

When I took her in for the 1000 mile check-up, they tried telling me it was just the fuel sloshing around in the tank, it obviously isn't.

Has anyone else had this issue and if you did, how did you solve it?

    Many thanks

Hi Dan- welcome to the club
Sounds like sticky brakes to me- noise happens when you release brakes or pull away?

      Hi Chris,

      Thanks for the reply!

It's only the handbrake, if it's been parked up for a few hours I can release the handbrake no problem but it's as soon as I move off that I sometimes get the noise. I have no problems with the brake pedal.

The handbrake engages the rear pads- so have a look and see how grooved, or if theres any rust residue (Normal) on the discs if you have them
If not, its not the air conditioning unit clunking, os something mechanical?

Ooh ok I see, apologies but I'm not really a mechanical person!

Yeah I do have discs on the back

I'm under warranty so I guess I could just take it to Citroen, just a bit put off by the £90 they charge to have a look, admittedly you do get it back if they find a fault, just a bit of a faf!

Mine does it EVERY morning and most evenings on way home......
DEFINITELY rear pads sticking on........especially with all this cold/damp/rain !!!!
If i let the handbrake off then wriggle/jump in my seat it usually 'clonks', otherwise
just as you touch the throttle.
Not much to cure it while weather's poo?!?
            :Joni: could grease-up the discs??

We'll I'm glad mines not the only one!

Aha I'll try wriggling around before I start the engine next time!

I think I'll avoid greasing the discs

They all do it LOL. You wanna leave if for a week, in the rain- then try LOL
£90 to have a look at an issue under warranty- thats Tosh
They had mine in once for a rattling sound- turned out it was my air horns getting loose that I had installed
They just smiled- and gave me the car back. No charge

ED- You could try not yanking the handbrake up to full grip. Just apply 3 clicks or so

Happens on mine too. Usually after a bit of rain or after the car has been sitting for a few days.

Mine too when it is damp. Don't think I care enough to get it looked at.... I'll wait till the next service I think.

Have you got a garage, or private piece of flat land Dan? If you have you could choc all the wheels (Bricks?) and leave the handbrake off overnight, and prove the clunking noise is the pads sticking to the discs?

This happens to my DS3 also. It’s nothing to worry about; the rear brakes can stick due to the pressure applied by the handbrake as the brakes cool. The clunk noise is most likely the pad separating form the disc.

Mine to makes this noise just the rear pads releasing from the disc , it's 12 month old an about to go in for its 1st service so I'll mention it when it goes in
                            If in Doubt FLAT OUT!!!!!!!!

Not sure there's a 'fix' as such??
Unless its ruffing the pads or discs up??
ALTHOUGH mine never did it for the first ~9,000 miles/4 months,
                              Its the last 2,000/2months.
                              (Wet weather, or bit old/shined?!?!?!)
