  • Fuel Reading In the Display Window

    Hi,

I wondered if someone might be able to answer a query that I have regarding the fuel reading on my e-HDi 90 please?

I picked up my new DStyle Plus last weekend, and it is the first diesel engine that I have ever had.

The question I have about it is to do with the fuel reading that is displayed in the computer window.

I filled the engine up to the top on the day that I picked the car up, expecting the range to immediately show that I had roughly 600 to maybe 700 miles before I would next be required to fill up, as was the case when I used to fill up my petrol C3.

However when I filled the engine up it only showed a range of approximately 450 miles and during the first week of driving it this remained around the same, only wavering slightly by up to 50 miles either side. It is only now that I am half way through the tank that it is consistently showing a reading of approximately 370 miles and reducing at a steady rate.

My question is, do other people find that their diesel engines show the total range immediately from filling up, or does it not work like that with a diesel engine please?

Was unsure whether this was the case or if there might be something wrong with my engine or the electronics in the car.

    Thank you!

    Laura

Hey, from what I gather it's to do with the MPG you are getting based on that tank. For example, I filled up at the start of last week and drove 20 miles during the week around town. Range was rather low! Then drove to thorpe park and back which was a good 2 hour each way and the range went up as I was getting a far far better mpg.

      Welcome to the club

The range is calculated based on the last 20-30 miles (not sure exactly) of driving. So when you picked it up it will have had very little data to calculate the range.

You said it's now showing 370 range for half a tank so for a full tank based on the same driving style then you should be looking at around 700miles.

Keep an eye on the gauge and fill it to the brim when you're down to 1 bar and you should get the range you're looking for

Tbh I'd be happy with a range of 450, but I have a petrol THP and I'm quite heavy footed so I'm lucky to see 300 miles

Yeah usually lands between 450 - 500. Highest I've ever seen mine is around the 550 mark and that was eco driving before and after fill-up.

            You'll get used to it

              Welcome.

The range counter works by dipping the tank every 10 miles or so as you travel, when you first fill up the car (and from when you start it first thing) the car takes a guess using data that it has gathered. Don't worry about any 'odd' reading it gives after you fill up as so as you start driving the range counter will start working out your mileage based on your driving.

As has been said the range figure will vary according to the way you're using the car. If you do a lot of very short trips the range will be very low. If you then do a long motorway journey the range reading will rise to reflect the more economical driving - on several occasions I've driven 150 miles or more before the indicated range has dropped back to what it was when I left home!

Another little quirk - the range shown on the speedo display will often vary by a mile or so from the figure shown on the multifunction screen!

                      It's quite amusing sometimes.
Hammering down the motorway on Sunday I noticed I had 40 miles of fuel left.
I slowed down due to traffic and by the time I came off 20 miles later I had 50 miles left!

On the other hand, when the tank is getting low I can easily knock 10 miles off the range just accelerating off the M56 onto the M67!

There's something about that junction that says "go for it"!

Thanks for the welcomes and the responses!

Definitely makes more sense now that I think about it!

Think I was just a bit unsure because my petrol C3 was consistent in showing the total range when I filled up and then it would steadily decrease from there until empty.
