  • driveshaft CV joint boot - check yours

Just done an overdue complete brake change on my 2010 27,000 mile THP

Noticed a bit of oiliness on the front caliper which drew my attention to the CV joint boot which was loose from the hub, and pulled away when the steering was on full lock.

The steel clamping band was still in place but had parted and therefore was doing nothing. What a crap piece of work - the boot must just be shoved on with the band already in place on the production line. I bought some aftermarket clips, but then used stainless jubilee clips which I had in stock. (I'll risk a tiny imbalance for the reliability of the clip)

Both sides of the car were the same so this isn't a one-off.

Best check yours next time you're under there!

Good find! Hope no dirt got in there. Need to go check mine.

Edit: mine are fine thank God. Cv joints / boots are such a suck ass job.

Is this something that can be checked easily without taking the wheel off?

possibly.............if you can move the metal band relative to the rubber then it's broken, or you could try to pull the rubber boot back from the hub - if it slides on the hub the band is likely broken

or I guess if you turn the wheel onto full lock as per my pic, and your band is broken, the boot will look like mine above, and will not be extended at the front doing it's job!
