How does automatic braking system work?

I had a slight knock to the front and since then I get an intermittent automatic braking fault. It more in the cold and wet. The front parking sensors also randomly come on at slow stop start traffic regardless of how close traffic is. Any ideas what I should check?

Jack it up, taker wheel off, and have good look round
Sensor could be bashed, wire may be damaged
Front discs damaged, something knocked out from brake caliper, semnsor fault
Could be anything
