  • Mirror Link knowledge?

Hopefully one of you has more brains than I....

Got my thp165 the other day and it's got the new touch screen business going on.

I'm having a bit of trouble (a lot) trying to get the Mirror Link thing to work. I've got a galaxy S5 on Lollipop that has it installed natively, but when I connect it to the car, the MirrorLink icon shows up for a second under the connected devices bit then disappears.

I left the handbook at my dad's when I was reading it so I cant check there, and I've searched in here to see if this has already cropped up but it doesnt look like it. Google also seems as helpful as I expect my nan would be in this situation.

I'm assuming that there is some incompatibility here as everything else with it has worked seamlessly so far.

Any takers? I will shower you with appreciation if I can get it working. Not a euphemism.

    Cheers

    Nath

Ah, cheers man. I read that but wasn't entirely sure as it was for the C1. Seems a bit bonkers to have to go back in time, but time to dig out my old S3 then I guess!

On the plus side, you can just stick it in console and keep it charged without having to cart it in and out all the time.

If you wanted to get fancy, you could always look at setting up some way of keeping it charged and store it away somewhere underneath the handbrake with a bit of velcro

        Every cloud and all that..

Now that's not a bad idea that, velcro it on the side so the seat hides it from view... I only wanted it for Google maps really as Bluetooth covers the rest, so a pay and go sim... Bit of velcro... You sir, may well have just sold that idea. 10 points.

Let's not do this half arsed then.

The cigarette lighter port should lift out pretty easily, you'll have a ground and a live. If you can find a respectable car charger you can solder/splice the wires to the ones from the cigarette lighter and keep it charged without any cables on show

Give us a shout if you want me to grab any pictures or advice.

Holy hell, you've doubled those 10 points.

I'll do some testing before I get out the soldering iron I'll probably end up buying because of this. I'd want to make sure the S3 could use MirrorLink for maps at the same time my actual phone could use Bluetooth for the phonecalls. I'm probably expecting a little too much with that, however I'm keeping the faith.

The other totally reasonable option would be sellotaping the charger wires directly to the car battery, and using some superglue to secure the phone onto the underside of the bonnet. That way I would also be able to watch YouTube video's whilst pretending to look at the engine and know what I'm doing

*edit* forgot for MirrorLink you need a USB connection. I'll just get a long cable out of the bonnet and in through the passenger window. Legit.

Right, PM me your details. We need to get some sort of patent sorted for this. The first HUD designed to universally fit all cars, motorcycles, boats and aeroplanes.

You sound like a dab hand at this electronics malarkey so we'll leave you in charge of design and engineering. I'll cover finance and HR and look after the website or something!

Looking forward to working with you, partner.

You're missing out cycles, caravans and horses. If you're going to patent something then we need to cover all the bases. I don't want to be ousted at the last minute by someone flogging the new Horse HUD 2.0 when we could have bought our 3rd houses with that money.

And yes, I know electronics like I know my own nan. Intimately. I've only ever been electrocuted once and that was at a zoo as a child. I hope you're just as handy with the intrawebs and spreadsheets, we're on to a winner.
