I believe you need a firm grip around the head and then pull hard

Do you find it's better to lubricate the top cyclone or does the rubbing up and down normally loosen it enough ?

No lubrication requred Chris. The friction generated in this operation is not enough to cause damage to the knob or shaft

I've heard that doing this too frequently or quickly can cause permanent damage. Is this true, or am I just being over cautious?

Second question, I've had quite a bit of experience with this before. Should I do it myself or get a friend to do it so they can build up some experience before they try with their own?

I think it's good to share experiences like this mate, maybe at a club gathering so all can gather round and watch, I find that flashing the lights lets everyone know you're ready for it to start
