  • Fly´s build - Plasti Dip mods as I go

So, I did my first "mod" today.

I plasti-dipped the rear emblem as a test (call me a sceptic) and so far, so good.

I can say, after this little experiment, I´m not concerned to now dip all the chrome parts and my winter wheels. It really was as easy as the videos say on Dipyourcar.com

In complete lack of originality I will be using black :O

Here´s my first go at this:

    Masked and first coat:

    2nd-3rd coats:

    4th and final coat:

    Ready to peel:

    Finished and drying properly:

I´ll keep notes and photos during the winter here on all the dipped parts, but especially the wheels and update here.

    Cheers

Nothing the matter with black on red. Classic good combo! You don't need to be flashy to turn heads.

Thanks! Yeah, was just out looking at it again, and it´s really looking good. The wife even approved.

So, will do all the remaining chrome bits this weekend, and the winter wheels in the next month or so.

Damn plasti-dip aint cheap up here but at least I´ve found a supplier in the local area!

Check out the video on dipyourcar.com for the smoke plasti-dip. Allegedly you get the best of both worlds! No loss of light and a cool black-out effect.

          I´m seriously considering it.

              BTW- Nice legs flyor lol
Found the 400mls cans of the competition for £8.40 on line- then add £3 carriage
Cheaper than plastidip, but is it as good?

LOL, that SRP does create a nice mirror-like finish dunnit?

As for the competition, I have zero experience with it, but I would offer an antecdote. A few years back I did a spray-in bed-liner for my truck. I chose the competition vs. the name-brand stuff as it was at least £50 cheaper. Within 6 months, it was peeling and flaking. Looked absolute shyte in a year. Ever since, when it comes to stuff like this, that can potentially ruin my car permanently, I spend the extra cash. But, like I said, I've no idea with this other stuff. Could be great.

ETA - I paid about £17 per can at a local boat supply shop. The cheapest I found it here on-line was approx £15 incl freight.

                      Round 2 - Plasti Dippin'

Ok, so I got the rest of the chrome bits done and thought I'd share.

Masking and prep (Might have gone a little overboard on the masking, but better safe than sorry right?)

I ended up with 5 coats on all parts:

I'll continue pics with the next post...

                        Round 2 (a) - Plasti Dip

Some more shots of the 5 coats (no order in particular):

Ready for peeling (pretty much just like the videos say):

                          Round 2 (b) - Plasti Dip

                          Some of the finished bits:

                          A chrome-free DS3:

A couple of notes from my experiment:

                          - Heed the video's advice that more is better. When peeling off overspray that I did not hit thick enough, it was challenging to get it all.

                          - 2 spraycans did 5 coats

                          - Not totally sure the handles will hold up over time. Two small kids who open their passenger door "ungently" may contribute

                          - At any rate, I have to re-do both door handles and passenger mirror because of too little overspray causing some bad removal in certain areas.

                          - I like the grille and emblems best. I'm undecided on the mirrors and the baguettes (think the mirrors would look better in white)

                          - Mirrors were decidely the hardest. I will really take my time on the re-spray. Taking care to get the spray in all the nooks n crannies.

My last project will be the winter wheels...although we are quickly running out of time! :O
