Sunderland Airshow 2013 promises precision flying, displays by the Red Arrows, and international stunt pilots – and the best things is, it’s free.

Sunderland Airshow 2013 is actually the 25th anniversary of the Sunderland Airshow. It’s a great day out for the family and if you’re looking for free things to do in the North East, Sunderland Airshow makes a perfect school summer holiday activity; not only can the children enjoy the Red Arrows, Hawker Hunter flight and aerobatic displays but they can also have a paddle on Sunderland’s coastline at Roker and Seaburn.

Sunderland Airshow 2013 is on Saturday July 27 and Sunday July 28, with a launch party at Cliffe Park on Friday July 26. The Sunderland Airshow launch party is 7-10pm, with a spectacular firework display and a performance from the Royal Marines Band Scotland and tribute band Re-Take that.

The night will also include a flying display which this year will include the Red Arrows, Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, Typhoon and the SWIP Twister Display Team. The Red Arrows are always a highlight for fans but if you miss them on Friday there'll be another chance to catch the Red Arrows performance on Saturday - if you're early.

The actual Sunderland Airshow 2013 itself will run 10am-6pm on Saturday and Sunday. The exact timings will only be confirmed in the souvenir programme on the day, but the performers will include the Red Arrows again early on Saturday; the RAF Falcons parachute display team; the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight again featuring the Lancaster, Hurricane and Spitfire; Eurofighter Typhoon; Tutor; Tucano; Lynx (Black Cat Solo); SAR Sea King helicopter, a Joint Helicopter Command Lynx; Royal Netherlands Air Force Apache demo team; Gerald Cooper – one of the top ten pilots in the world flying his Sbach; The Matadors aerobatic display team; Hawker Hunter Miss Demeanour flown by Jonathon Whaley; and wingwalkers on Sunday and a Catalina flying boat.

As well as the main events in the air, there’ll be plenty of ground-based fun too, including inflatables and simulators, exhibitions from the three arms of the armed forces, a Royal Marines Commando Display Team, and funfairs in Ocean Park and near Jet Amusements. There will also be exhibitions from Hasbro, Oreo and Nintendo along the seafront and in Recreation Park.
