  • laptop help please

    Hi all,
I'm thinking of getting a Lenovo g505 laptop. The spec is as follows:
    8gb ram
    AMD Radeon HD8570M 1Gb graphics.
    AMD A4-5000 APU Processor
    1TB Hard drive.

My question is does anyone have this model and could give me their thoughts on it. Im a bit behind on the old computer tech knowledge!
I'd use it for downloading, browsing etc all the usual stuff but I'd like it to handle at least some level of gaming.

Oh, and its £349 which I thought sounds pretty decent for the spec.

My current laptop is the Dell inspiron 1720.

    Any help much appreciated, cheers

Well it's definitely going to be better than your Dell. Price seems reasonable too

Seems like a good deal. I've always been a fan of Intel when it comes to CPU but you can't really go wrong with AMD either.

I don't know anything about that particular model, but I've got a Lenovo S205 netbook, which uses an AMD E450 processor. I can't fault it - more of a "quality" feel than most of the competion, the keyboard in particular. The price you've found sounds good for 8GB RAM.

Ive only just noticed this but for future reference, Lenovo are just about the worlds No1 producers of quality mobile computers.

8GB should be considered the sweet spot for RAM, just look to see how it configured ie does the laptop come with 2 RAM slots and if so how many are populated, 2 x 4GB stick will be faster than a single 8GB stick, however it limits your upgrade path in terms of total RAM (without having to replace the current sticks).

16GB is a waste unless numerous background tasks need to be run or you use photo and video editing software a lot, then if you do a laptop CPU will be underpowered anyway.

Laptop CPUs and graphics processors are not the same as the desktop versions even if the naming system is the same. ie an Intel Haswell i7 4770 desktop CPU is considerabley more powerfull than a Haswell i7 4770 'mobile'.

Same with graphics hardware, an Nvidia 780GTX desktop graphics card is completely different from a 780GTX 'mobile' card, and when I say completely different I mean they share only the name.

If you have or intend to install a Solid State Drive, it will only be as fast as the interface (Sata 1, 2, 3) very few Laptops run Sata 3 interfaces, certainly not cheaper models. Whilst Sata 3 can hit over 500mb/s, sata 2 will max out at about half that speed. (I get 330mb/s from my sata 3 drive due to the Sata 2 interface on this lappy.

Finally, AMD are years ahead of Intel when it comes to APU's, whilst the raw power of the CPU may be less than an Intel chip, its graphics core is upto 5 times more powerful than Intel onboard graphics (and can be as fast as a £150 dedicated graphics card).

Give me a shout if any advice is needed.

Sorry for any typos but im sitting in the sun and cant really see what im typing (or be bothered to proof read).
