  • Which new laptop to buy?

    Hi folks

I need a new laptop. I can't get excited about buying one so thought you experts could chose for me!

It need not be high spec. No complicated games will be played on it. Mostly it will be used for the following:

    1. Surfing the web.
    2. Storing photographs ( but not 1000's)
    3. Microsoft Office
    4, Talking to you lot
    5. Simple games (Mrs Jimbob likes Farm Frenzy and Cake Mania )
    6. NOT needed to download films etc.

    I'm open to your comments!

    Budget?

You could always look at ChromeOS laptop with a small SSD and store all of your images/documents online if cost is a factor.

    Ideally you'll be looking for:
    CPU - 2+Ghz
    RAM - 4GB+
HDD - Whatever's needed. You'll benefit more from an SSD if speed is what you want but with this you'll typically take a hit on the amount of storage space you have.

Check out sites like ebuyer.com and even Amazon and keep your eye on their daily deals.

If it's just for photos, a portable external drive would work fine, then storage on the laptop itself shouldn't be an issue.

Friend of mine bought a Microsoft Surface and he has been really happy with it, he uses Office 365 which is online based but does the job for what he wants. I would add the keyboard to make things easier but for everything else it should do the job.

That said they are a little pricey at the moment.

          DO NOT BUY AN ACER

          What size screen?

          DO NOT BUY AN ACER

Do you need a DVD drive?

          DO NOT BUY AN ACER

          Is battery life/usage a factor.

          DO NOT BUY AN ACER

As fish mentioned, an SSD produces zero noise, requires less power and is astonishingly quicker than a conventional Hard Disk Drive. The downside is cost per GB but as you will only need a small capacity drive then it isn't as much of an issue.
I run SSDs in all my rigs including desktops and laptops, using a platter HDD breaks me now, soooooo slow.

                ha ha ha

They have a very high failure rate (screens generally) and questionable CS.

@ Jimbob, once you have your laptop, give me a shout and il run you through getting rid os the bloat/spyware that WILL be pre-installed with the operating system.

In fact il knock up a guide as I have one to do when I'm home, replace the HDD with an SSD and download and install a CLEAN copy of W10 64 then mod it so no reporting back to MS.

Thanks for that and all the others giving advice.

I have taken the specs advised plus the recommendation for Ebuyer and ordered one today. I have seen the same spec as the one I ordered about £75 more at Curry's!

                    Cheers

Once it arrives and you are up and running, download and instal the following program
                      https://www.piriform.com/speccy
Its a great little prog that will show you exactly what hardware you have and any relevant revision numbers.
I'm not saying that I don't trust online etailors to intentionally send out lower spec items, it just that I don't trust online etailors to intentionally send out the correct spec items.
I wont bore you with too many stories but I solved a friends poor gaming performance after he had taken his desktop to PC World for a service (that is another story), I told him to go back to the store and insist they put his original graphics card back in, thieving gits had replaced it with a cheaper (slower) version.
