  • Insurance with driving offences

    Hi all,

Was recently charged with careless driving - code CD10 I believe. Was issued with 4 points and a £200 fine, conveniently a few weeks before my insurance is up for renewal.

I've only been driving a year, 1 years ncd on a 2011 THP.

Expecting to get made a right example of with insurance quotes, since the price from my current provider came in ridiculously at £4200.

Money supermarket, go compare, and confused were all giving me quotes in the region of 4-7k, which is completely undoable. If I cant get the insurance below 3k the car will be going, just cant justify it.

I realise offences such as this make drivers higher risk, but I'm still within my 2 year new driver probationary period, the thought of losing my license is enough of a deterrent never mind having to rattle the overtime to afford insurance.

Anyone in a similar position know any insurers that specialise in situations like this?

    Cheers!

Black box unfortunately sounds like the way you'll need to go in order to get anything affordable

Thats what I was thinking, although most black box providers wont even give me a quote [emoji15] waiting on a call back from adrian flux

Hubby just had to administer smelling salts after I fainted reading your post. £4200 for insurance! You'll be okay if you get it for under £3000! If I've ever said I want to be young again - I take it all back!

I'm in a very similar position (also from near Glasgow funnily enough) I have three points and have been driving for under 2 years. I don't have any NCB, but my insurance was only 1.5k from Aviva, no black box or anything. So I'm very shocked to see this!

Not familiar with how things work in the UK, but when I first got my licence insurance would have been over $3000 per year, nearly as much as the car I had at the time. But what I could do was insure the car in my dad's name bringing the premium down to around $800, not list my name on the insurance, and then pay a 'young driver excess' (approx $2500) on top of the normal excess if I had to make a claim. As I said though, not sure if things are different over there on the other side of the world.

It might be worth giving Chris Knott a look - their details are on the forum

Also, adding a family member brought mine down a fair bit when I was younger, so maybe get a quote with someone else on as a named driver?

This, adding my mum as a second driver dropped my insurance a fair way on my first DS3.

Young age will always be an issue but it seems the careless driver conviction is what is going to really make the insurers and brokers sweat

                    Good luck

You have to be careful for example you can't insure your car with say your parent/s being the main driver, when you drive the car most of all. You can add them as a named driver as suggested above which should help a bit.

Definitely give Aviva a go, they're not on price comparison sites and have always come out cheapest for me as a young driver.
Beyond that try a few quotes with advanced driving courses on them like Pass Plus, if they're reasonable then it may be worth doing one of those.
You'll also want to get some named drivers on, I've always had my uncle on mine but I just added my girlfriend to my Benz... I was expecting a £100-£200 price hike but they actually refunded me £26 for adding her!

                        Good luck with it all!

Yeah adding Kat as a named driver to my current DS3 saved me loads, she's obviously more responsible than me

Interesting Richard, every time I get sucked into trying Direct Line/Aviva they always come out the most expensive! ¬_¬

In regards to offences sometime you might be better off speaking with an Insurance Broker who would be able to steer towards more specialist insurers that handle drivers with points. Years ago I was a member of the section 35 club and found insurance through the main stream agents nearly impossible, but after a call to a few specialists I got insured no bother and without little extra cost to me.

I assume this is the Driving Act and not the mental health one (When the criminal courts send you to hospital for a medical report)? xD
