  • New MG - thoughts

i really dont know what to think of this. i want to like MG's, i had a rover 200 and it was terrible in every way (broke down, leaked, creaked, smelt, bad on fuel, slow, heavy clutch, worthless) but i was always proud of it lol!, something about hanging onto British motoring as much as i could. my parents have a mint 216 cabriolet in the garage and its never had any problems.

this new MG which is chinese owned just seems as terrible as the older ones. Id hoped after all this time they could put out something good that has stand out features or a reasonable price point, but it has neither. its expensive, the 0-60 seems slow for such a big engine (limited to 120 mind!) and its probably rubbish on petrol. (no diesel option). The dash is out of date and make scoobies look luxurious. as for the design it looks like a vauxhall and not a sport car.

to sum it up. the car is about 10 years out of date already and i dont think die hard MG fans will even buy it (they dont buy BMW minis). Think the BMW crowds might be persuaded though, will compliment their mini's lol

    What does everyone else think?

I don't like it, it just seems so plain compared to all modern cars, which are full of curves and contours.

^^ Same, it looks like it's trying to be a Monaro, but fails, plus the only thing I like from China is the food lol

It looks a bit like a golf from the front and also has echos of Toyota but certainly nothing like a British MG, and that seems the problem with a car like this. The makers always want to hark back to nostalgia of some past design with some of the instrumentation in the car reflecting this. I think they should have dropped the MG badge has MG to me conjures up images of crap British build quality of old. It doesn't look radical or inspiring just looks like an ordinary mondeo-esque family run about. I think it gets to 60 in around 8.5 secs and incredibly its still powered by a k-series engine pioneered in the early 90's! A car that's not exactly moved on.

i love the sound of a k series, but i swear there built out of lego, they seem to idle quiet heavy and stink like crap. i know its an odd thing to say about a car but you can get smelly exhust fumes, my berlingo smelt like an ashtray

In all honesty, the k series engine has been updated a lot, although it has its probs in past it was a good engine for years compared to the cmpetitors , apparantly a new turbos on the way too.

You're right about the die-hard MG fans - and by that I mean those who owned MGs when they WERE MGs, not badge-engineered Hondas (good though they were in their day).

There's nothing MG about this lukewarm effort. And BMW/Mini owners wouldn't touch it any more than they would a Kia or a Proton.

Basically it's a very average Chinese car using 20 year-old oily bits that's had its sub--assemblies shipped half-way round the world so they can be bolted together in Longbridge.

An MG? Don't make me laugh!

Both links are down, bodes well for the future of the car then doesn't it?
