1st March until 31st August the numbers are the year, i.e. 11 for 2011.
1st September until 28/29 February the numbers are the year + 50, i.e 61 for Sept 2011 - Feb 2012
The full plate is made up of 2 letters that are assigned to the area the car is registered, 2 numbers designating which part of the year the car was registered and then 3 random letters.
This website explains it quite well.DS3 Racing, also available in White!!!

Well all I was interested in was what the # mean. 1st half and 2nd half of the given year simple, silly but simple.Originally posted by cyclone
It is in the handbook. Satisfied.

The plates break down in this way;
The first two letters tell you the area and which DVLA office reg'ed the car
The first number is the tell what part of the year the car was reg'ed in
The second number is the year identifier i.e 2010, 2011, 2012
And the last three letters are random.
So SY60 UAF (Boo's reg) would tell us that her car was reg'ed in Scotland at Inverness, after September the 1st 2010 but before March the 1st 2011.
The system is very easy to use and understand....I should never have doubted the Lord of Bacon!!

I've just read the Northern Ireland section of the Vehicle Registration Plate page on wikipedia and I am so confused about the NI method.
I personally think that Guernsey have the best number plates!Proud owner of missing wonky stickers

i worked in the belfast tax office for like 4 years from October 2006 so maybe it seems a bit more straight forward for me lol! for example, the current Belfast reg is GFZ and all reg series' run from 1 - 9999 (when I started there it was JEZ), basically if someone came in and got a car registered, they would just get the next number on the list. we'll go with say GFZ 9587, the next person gets GFZ 9588 and so on. certain numbers are kept and sold at auction (same as DVLA) numbers 1-1000 are all auctioned, aswell as all other '000 numbers. consecutive numbers like 1234, 4567 etc, and double numbers like 5566 or 5577.also things like 5301, would be auctioned as someone with a BMW 530i, for example may want to buy it. same goes for numbers that could be used as years of birth, 19..
Then when the last GFZ number is taken, the next belfast reg series will be HFZ.
The reg i have on my car however (NIB 7000) didn't have to be paid for as at that stage the numbers were not auctioned off and it came on our 1990 rover 214!
hopefully that will make sense to atleast one person and then that wont have wasted any of my time!Polar white with black roof, black bellones - My Photies!!
