DG would be from the Chester office.

The 'D' would point you narrow you down to Deeside or Shewbury and the 'G' would confirm that your car was registered at the Chester DVLA Office.

Hmm ok, is that normal even though I dont like in Chester? Or is it just a Reg office for the Whole of North West?

Thought I would have been under M (Merseyside)

It will depend on where you local dealer has registered for AFRL, normally it will be the closest office available.

Bear in mind that your dealer doesn't GO to the DVLA as the registration is done on site at the dealership, the details are recored through the local DVLA Office.

I think this system is stupid and pointless. I don't think they thought the year part through properly...61 to show it was registered in Sept 2011 just doesn't make sense to me.

Stop me if I lose you okay?

The reason the first of the 'new' style plates look the way they do is because the last of the pre-fix number run out in 2001. The new system is design to count up but there needed to a be a split because we have two registrations per year, so March would start at '0' and September at '5'. The second number is matched to the current year so when the system started out it was on '51' which matched 2001, and when march came in on '02' it matched the year 2002 and so on.

This allows us to have 50 years of the new reg numbers before the system starts again. When you look at the table you should be able to make sense of it all!

It didn't come out the way I hoped! Changed it for a link which has a better example!
