  • Tracking way out worn front inners!

Just had the Annual Service completed this morning and was advised tracking way off causing inside fronts to wear significantly. Tyres have covered 10,800 miles only and look like they will need replacing at 13k due to the tracking issue. Dealer reported during service And then relieved me of £29.95 for putting it right.

Is that normal for the tracking to run out so much in 1 year/10k miles? We had a Citroen C3 some years ago and sold it after 2 years with 43k miles on the clock with all original tyres! I do not believe the car was properly set up having worn the tyres like that, anyone else had the same issue?

    Hi Riggs,

You only need to hit one pothole to put the tracking out - so you can do it in mile number 1 ! The lower profile the tyres the easier it is to knock the tracking out....I've also got a 4x4 and that never gets knocked out.

I check my tyre wear across the tyre weekly....or thereabouts...

I sometimes wish I had a sticker in my rear window which says 'I'm not drunk I'm simply avoiding potholes'... (I think the sticker actually exists!)...

    Regards,
    Clive.

It's sad to think that we class potholes as an everyday occurence...driving around here we have one of the worst set of roads in the UK I'm sure of it!

Average potholes in rochdale is about 60cm in diameter and 10cm deep! Road Tax is a waste of time imo!

            Tracking ,suspension and wheels

Thread revival warning. Didn't wanna start new thread, but thought would add what been told by tyre specialist bout my current wheels

Have got 15 offset 17 inch aftermarket Team Dynamic pro race 3s on at the moment, with 40 profile tyres
First thing been told is that speedo will be out (That's why recently been chasing getting speed on my GPS) and according to websites its 3.44%
That tallys actually, wheels go round a little bit quicker than profile 45s, so speedo slightly over what actual is- only by 3.5mph if doing 100mph. (Tyre place tried to suggest as much as 10mph, then tried flogging me some tyres LOL) and the sat nav (Thanks all) seems to suggest a little out. That's fine

Next thing was the offset being 15. He said as offset should be 25, and tracking/ suspension not been set up for 15 offset, it would wear the inside of my tyres quickly. Can understand his explanation, but when looking at the tyres Ive had on for about 2000 miles, they hardly look different on the inside. (Only cheap tyres so not fussed anyway) Again- he was punting to do some work on the tracking and suspension I think. However- be interesting to hear what others think, as many put on spacers, so do they sort the tracking and suspension each time- or just put up with the wear on the tyre? Ive 3 sets of wheels to cant keep changing suspension/tracking around, other than the wheels LOL

That's the reason I withdrew my Bellones from sale, as he rated Bridgestones great for grip if going on a track, and that what I will be doing shortly

It was also suggested that if you could increase the width (Currently all 205s) tyres on the 7j rims, more power can be transferred to the roadsurface, rather than wasting it.
Any ideas max width for a 7j rim anyone?

Finally- he took mine for a test drive and raved about it LOL (Thanks Graham)

I suspect Zack or cyclone might be the best ones to comment on this Chris, I've seen both post some decent info on tyres/wheels/fitment before

Correct, I believe the online calculators are accurate but as you can see it's not making a massive difference. If you we're worried you could get your speedo re-calibrated to take the new sizes into account, but personally I think this is more hassle than what it's worth.

True that the tracking is setup for factory fit ET25 but you're talking 10mm difference on each side - I can't see how it would directly cause your tyres to have greater inner wear - obviously if they're rubbing on the inside of the wheel well somewhere that's a different matter

Few ways to look at this - I think all factors are minimal but they are valid points. Increasing the tyre width will give you: better cornering speed and grip in the corners, it'll reduce overall wear as the weight of the car is spread more evenly across a wider surface, you're more likely to aquaplane with wider tyres, it's worse for rain / snow / ice (Winter) as the weighted grip is spread across the wider surface.

You could go to 215 if you wish but I wouldn't recommend going up to 225 on a 7J.

To get ideas for what your tyre will look like on your wheel you can look at www.tyrestretch.com

Cheers Zack- that's great. Might get some 215s on one of my sets, for track and summer

I was always led to believe that using wheels with a different ET to standard may put an uneven load on the wheel bearings,as in standard form the load is balanced across the width of inner and outer bearing...just my two penny worth

It also screws up the steering geometry!

So wheel spacers have the same effect?
Not sure bout the wheels bearings, but geometry, that's part of my post. Easy sorted- just gotta keep sorting when you change wheels

Yes they will Chris,as with standard ET and a spacer your altering the geometry and moving the load centre on the bearings
