[/IMG]Just got back from Marshal Training at Brands Hatch

Theme was Team Work. The pushing of the car involved moving both backwards and forwards down a slalom course

Instructions given to the driver who was blindfolded and the car had now power so steering was difficult

Fire Training was part of the training day but no cars due to health and safety reasons

..................and the environment. Pity or could have been this

My 2013 Marshal season starts when four champions will be going head to head in the opening round of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship at Brands Hatch this Easter (30/31 March). The series returns after a thrilling climax to the 2012 season that saw Gordon Shedden crowned for the first time at the Kent circuit.

Shedden and team mate Matt Neal, who is chasing a record-equalling fourth title, will continue their successful partnership at the Honda Racing team. The squad's Civic is on form but there will be a strong challenge from the MG team, which came close to overall honours last season with Jason Plato at the wheel. The two-time champion, whose long-standing rivalry with Neal has provided plenty of fireworks, returns with the Triple 8-run outfit, with whom he won the 2001 title. Joining him will be Sam Tordoff, a title challenger in the BTCC-supporting Renault Clio Cup and Porsche Carerra Cup, who is tipped to be a future Touring Car star.

Rejoining the fray will be 2009 champion Colin Turkington, who makes a long-awaited return to the series, his first appearance since taking the title at Brands Hatch that year. He will be back in a BMW, this time a brand new 1-Series run by the eBay Motors team, and is expected to be fighting for victories from the start. Turkington will be joined by Rob Collard, who won last year's opening race on his way to fifth place in the overall standings.

There are two dark horses for the title in the field, with Andrew Jordan and Wrotham-based Motorbase's Mat Jackson aiming high for 2013. Jordan was a contender at last year's finale in the Pirtek-run Civic, whilst Motorbase came on strong late last year with their brand new Ford Focus. Both drivers are ready to make the next step to championship victory and will be tough to beat.

The BTCC is set for another highly-competitive season, with many more drivers in the pack ready to take victory at the first round. Frank Wrathall made the breakthrough late last year and continues to improve, whilst Rob Austin has secured a big sponsor to help his progress towards the front, and former title contender Tom Onslow-Cole fronts local outfit Team HARD's ambitious line-up. With so many more contenders for the race wins and an expected grid of over 25 cars, the opening races should be the most fiercely-contested for some time. The BTCC is renowned for bumper-to-bumper action and is rarely short on thrills, and with so many points to prove the opening weekend is unlikely to disappoint!

In addition to the three BTCC races, the support package features non-stop action from the Renault Clio Cup, Porsche Carrera Cup, Formula Ford Championship, Ginetta GT Supercup and Ginetta Junior categories. The circuit's natural amphitheatre setting plus giant TV screens for the event mean that fans will miss none of the action, whilst off-track entertainment for all the family includes a fun fair, go-karting and a free pitwalk and autograph session on raceday.

Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship at Brands Hatch this Easter Weekend

My 2013 season started at the Easter Weekend and after a relatively quiet Qualifying Session my Marshaling experience was put to the test with a couple of big incidents involving two Ginettas in one of the supporting races and a big accident between Rob Austin and Dave Newsham. This helped to keep me warm over a bitterly cold weekend.

            Ginetta Accident

            BTCC Crash

Both incidents witnessed by ds3adi who came to watch

As a result of a great start to the BTCC Jason Plato leads after taking two wins from the opening three races of the season on the Brands Hatch Indy circuit.

Matt Neal led home Honda Yuasa Racing team-mate Gordon Shedden in the final race to ensure the champion squad ended a challenging weekend on a high. Fellow Honda Civic driver Andrew Jordan is second in the standings after securing a pole position, two second places and a sixth from the weekend.

Plato won the opening race of the year after coming out on top of a pulsating battle with Jordan. Rob Austin had led the early running in his Audi A4 before both Plato and Jordan slipped by. A closing Jordan made one final lunge on Plato in an attempt to claim victory, and the rather optimistic move ended in contact with both cars sliding off the track. Incredibly both scrabbled their way back onto the circuit before third placed Austin had arrived, and Plato hung on to win.

Race two was a much more commanding affair as Plato took a lights-to-flag victory – the 76th win of his record breaking BTCC career. Jordan again claimed second, ahead of the charging Honda of reigning champion Shedden. The Scotsman was later excluded, however, after his car failed ride height regulations during post-race scrutineering, handing Jeff Smith a popular podium for Pirtek Racing.

Triple-champion Neal then went on to secure his first win of the new campaign, leading home team-mate Shedden by an incredibly close 0.083s. Neal took the lead early on after pole-sitter Mat Jackson slid wide in his Ford Focus at Druids. The Honda driver went on to take charge of the race, before fending off a late challenge from Shedden. A great drive from 23-year-old Sam Tordoff saw him score his maiden BTCC podium for the MG KX Momentum team, which along with Plato’s healthy points score means the squad is in charge of the Manufacturer standings.

The final race also included a huge accident when Dave Newsham spun his Toyota Avensis on the dip between Paddock and the run up to Druids. Austin attempted to take avoiding action but clipped Newsham’s stricken car on his way through. Austin’s Audi ran on to the grass at high speed before making heavy impact with the barrier on the inside of the circuit. Both drivers emerged unscathed from the dramatic incident.

The Jack Sears Trophy – for S2000 cars – is led by Liam Griffin after the Addison Lee Motorbase driver claimed two wins in his Ford Focus. James Kaye was the inaugural victor having won the first race in the AmDTuning.com VW Golf.

It was Jason Plato who left Kent with the biggest smile as the double-champion holds a nine-point lead in the standings over Jordan. Tordoff’s maiden podium and two top-six finishes mean he lies third in the championship, followed by the consistent Smith and race three victor Neal. The BTCC battle is rejoined at Donington Park in Leicestershire on 20-21 April.

Jason Plato said: “I am delighted with the first two wins. Last year was a sign of what might have come for us at MG – but we’ve changed the balance considerably now so it’s much easier to drive. It has been a good weekend.”

Matt Neal said: “I’m really chuffed with the one-two after what’s been a tough weekend, but they always say to finish on a high. It was a nice way to finish the race in Honda formation – it reminded me of the last race of last season.”

Penalties: Frank Wrathall (Dynojet) was fined £1000 and given three penalty points on his competition licence for incidents in race two.

              British Truck Racing Championship
              Brands Hatch (Indy)

              Saturday 20 - Sunday 21 April 2013

Truck racing is one of the most impressive sights in UK motorsport. These 1,000bhp leviathans can out drag a Porsche 911 and corner with astonishing agility, often with the rear stepping out in a spectacular powerslide.

The brave drivers aren't afraid to risk a bit of body contact as they jostle for position! Boasting acceleration of 0-100mph in less than five seconds, trucks defy their size, and bear almost no resemblance to the machines that you see on the public roads

                  TRUCK RACING 20/21 April 2014

An excellent turn-out of 20 trucks meant full grids for the second event in the 2013 BTRA Championship. Some glorious sunny weather and the challenge of the twisty 1.2-mile Brands Hatch ‘Indy’ circuit certainly generated a lot of public interest – and the large crowds were provided with some really entertaining racing on both Saturday and Sunday.

The combination of the new BTRA ‘reverse grid’ format and the short, tight track meant that the drivers were kept working very hard as they negotiated considerable ‘traffic’ throughout virtually every race. And with all races now increased in length (15 mins. + 1 lap) some were looking exhausted by the time they had completed their fifth outing!
The hard-fought battle for outright and class honours meant that there was always plenty of activity in the paddock between races as the hard-working mechanics endeavoured to keep machinery running sweetly and looking presentable.

                  MAT’S THE MAN

Only one driver seemed to fully conquer the new-format BTRA races at Brands –and that was reigning champion Mat Summerfield (MAN) who stormed to Division 1 victories in all five races while also reeling in and passing the Division 2 machinery in three of the races.

Dave Smith started the defence of his Division 2 crown in a similarly convincing fashion – heading the field and claiming class honours in the first three outings. But Tonbridge-based Smith couldn’t make it a clean-sweep on Sunday as he lost his power steering after mid-race contact and was forced to retire to the pits, leaving another local lad – Graham Powell (ERF) to claim his first win. Smith struck back in Race 5 – climbing from the back of the Division 2 grid to the front – and then pulling clear to finally take the overall chequered flag – ahead of the ‘handicapped’ Div. 1 champ Summerfield.

There were fantastic battles all the way through the field – from the start of the opening race on Saturday afternoon right through to the final lap of the last outing on Sunday…and with too many individual ‘incidents’ to fully cover here. But full credit to all our BTRA teams (drivers and mechanics) plus our visiting competitors from Holland and Germany for putting on a really superb show that had the crowd........................................

My next Marshal event is the DTM (German Touring Cars)

                    Brands Hatch (Indy)

                    Friday 17 - Sunday 19 May 2013

DTM is the world's most spectacular touring car series, with V8-powered racers representing Germany's big three manufacturers: Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz. The cars may resemble their road-going equivalents but underneath are closer to Formula 1 machines!

Bromley's Gary Paffett will be out to avenge his 2012 championship defeat by just a single point, and victory at home will strengthen his bid to add a second DTM title to his collection. However Brit Jamie Green will also be out to win, following his off-season switch to Audi, as well as BMW's Andy Priaulx, former triple World Touring Car Champion.

DTM remains a popular destination for Grand Prix drivers and Timo Glock is the latest to sign up for the series, whilst F1-style DRS and option tyres will spice up the action. It also attracts racing stars from all over the world to spectate - Brands Hatch will be the centre of the motorsport world at DTM in May!
