When I moved to Norfolk from God's Own Country nearly 30 years ago at the wife's persuasion, the deal was that I'd get a Lotus (support your local motor industry, etc, etc) but then the kids started arriving and I've still never owned one.

Got to scratch that itch one day.

When I moved to Norfolk from God's Own Country nearly 30 years ago at the wife's persuasion, the deal was that I'd get a Lotus (support your local motor industry, etc, etc) but then the kids started arriving and I've still never owned one.

Got to scratch that itch one day.

Does Lotus still stand for Lots Of Trouble, Usually Serious?

They are higher maintenance that an everyday car. But not massively so. There are plenty of independent specialists out there to maintain at a reasonable price.

In 2000 I decided I wanted an Elise, a local company had 1 for hire so I parted with £500 and hired it for a week. The plan was to see if I could live with the car as everyday transport, the week involved a couple of commutes to work a weekend visit to my brother 150 miles away and just driving around to use up the daily mileage allowance ( I'm 1/2 Scottish so I wasn't going to waste my money by not using the car as much as I could ). When I picked the car up the guy took me through how the roof came off ( not the easiest thing, took several minutes :confused: ) and his advice was if it looks like it might rain don't bother taking the roof off!!!! Anyway it was a brilliant handling car but there were so many things that put me off having it as my only car, road / engine noise with the roof up or down and getting in and out of the car required acrobatic skills, you needed to park somewhere you could get the doors fully open unless you had the roof down are just some of the problems. I test drove a Toyota MR2 roadster a few weeks later and as soon as the salesman showed me how easily the roof could be lowered and raised whilst still sat in the car with your seat belt on I was sold. Kept her for almost 7 years, did several trackdays with the owners club, but having moved somewhere without a garage I decided it was time for something else and bought my first Citroen, a C2 which then made way for my Racing. It may not be quite the racing car the Elise is but it comes close on the roads I regularly travel and it's usable everyday
So to cut a long story short get a Lotus for the weekends / trackdays but forget it as everyday transport.

I used my Elise for every day transport for 4 1/2 years, doing an average of about 20,000 miles a year. It is possible, but you have to be willing to put up with a lot. My Europa is better for daily transport, which is why I bought it. But now I don't get a fuel card and my office is 75 miles from home, I needed something a bit more sensible, hence the DS3 purchase.

Luckily I have been able to keep the Europa for weekends and trackdays, so I now have 2 cars I love
