  • Stupid Insurance Companies

I got a letter from LV stating that they would not insure me any more because of my engine modification (remap). They said it was simply a change of policy and not just me personally. They didn't want to insure any modified vehicles apparently.

So I did what we all do and looked for an alternative on a comparison web site and at others suggested by members on here (thanks Fish).

Guess which came out the cheapest? LV!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Phoned them up to make sure that it was okay to accept this new quote (which was actually LESS than the renewal amount). They asked for all my details and looked at the quote. They then said "Oh THAT kind of mod! No that's OK - we thought it might be a different kind of mod." This is even though I told them up front exactly what the mod was when it was done!

So - stay with them for cheaper insurance!!!! The world has gone mad.

Had the same issue with Swift when I renewed the Picasso, for some reason to start with my Picasso was too old?? After phoning and speaking with an underwriter direct he told me that the system was playing silly buggers and sorted it out and made it nearly £70 cheaper as well which was a nice bonus!

I'm currently with Kwik Fit insurance and they won't touch a remapped car, not that mine is, but was considering. I will try LV before I decide whetehr to do it or not.

Has anyone else got reccomendations of which insurance companies are ok with remaps.

Admiral and Elephant both provided me with fairly decent quotes with my mods.

Every year the wife cancels and renews car insurance, house insurance, gas, electricity, etc etc and we save every time. They just bank on people being lazy and accepting a renewal quote.

I got a renewal quote this year that was a few quid higher than my previous year's policy, so I ran my details through those nice meerkat people to see if I could beat it.

Got a new quote online - from the same firm - that was a cool £40 cheaper than they'd quoted me in my renewal notice, for the exact same cover (same excess, same mileage etc etc).

So out of interest, I rang them up and asked if they could reduce the renewal premium to match the online price. No, they said - we can't match it - new customers get a discount.

So I cancelled the automatic renewal, and took out a new policy online. Bingo (and I got another meerkat to add to my daughter's growing collection)

Last year we cancelled our house insurance then took out the same policy with the same company as a new customer for less money.

Most renewal type insurance is aimed at the non-intranet using people, elderly, and people not interested in searching for lower premiums
Havent had the same buildings insurance on my house, since the time you were allowed to get it away from the mortgage provider
And as for car insurance- went 15 years with a different one every year, with all sorts of cashback, extended term etc etc

End of the day- your paying for fresh air with Insurance (Piece of mind too)

Always seems to be a £50 cash back, and if the other companies price is similar to renewal price, its great to get the cash in the bank.....draw the £50 out, n go have a nice meal, bottle wine. :star:

I guess this 69 year old must be the exception to your rule, I not only use the internet (gosh) but I get the lowest possible insurance quotes plus the lowest gas and electricty tarrifs etc.

Good for you Ivorex- wish there were more like you. Don't like seeing anyone get ripped off
My statement wasn't intended as a catch all..... theres a good core of Silver surfers on the ball, but unfortunately (And cant blame them really) a fair few who don't know how to switch a computer on

Like my Drs surgery, appointment online about 2-3 days.... but if you telephone call in, its about 3 weeks! Bit discriminating if you ask me, as a good percentage will be retired people

Age is just a number. Old is a state of mind.
