Hi folks

Someone has given me a security camera with a cable (SCART) for recording to video.

Can I convert to record on my PC by, for example, converting SCART to some other input?

If so will I also need some suitable software?

Appreciate any advice.

Hi Jim,

You should be able to locate a scart to s-video cable at any decent electronics store; asda/tesco may even stock them.

You won't be able to download to your PC as scart is typically used just to play video/sound.

Good on yer Dangerous. I can get scart to s-video easy enough but is that all I need? Is capture software built in to Windows?

If you're just looking to play back is there any reason you can't do this through your TV?

Check your PC has an S-video in before going out and buying a cable first.

I'm not sure of any other way of doing it off the top of my head unless you can get the raw data off the camera some other way. Is it tape or digital storage?

Basically I want to put the camera up and record video as a security.
This means recording on a PC as video player technology (for which this was designed) is out of date.
Basically just want to leave the camera on, come back and review what has been recorded then reset and start recording again.

I managed to get hold of a kit from Lidl for transferring from Video to PC. It was a bunch of cables to connect just about any video source to USB, and some video capture software.
Might have been Cyberlink powerDirector...not sure if you can pick that up as a freebie from somewhere...

Ah, ok. In that case then:

1. Check you have a video card that can be used with the Scart connection. i.e. S-video, F-connector, composite, etc..

2. Download an app called VNC to your PC (this can be used to capture a video stream)

3. Plug in the camera, and test this is working.

You'll probably find you'll eat into a lot of disk space if you're leaving this on for long periods of time and not clearing off archived videos so make sure you have enough disk space before you begin.
