Dash Cam

Hi all,
Does anyone here use a dash cam for their DS3? What would you recommend?

I currently use a GoPro Hero2 (not bought as a dash cam but it's all it gets used for atm).
This works well in Full HD and is hidden behind the mirror but the battery life means I need to charge it daily.
Was looking at a BlackVue HD but it's very pricey, and online footage doesn't match up to the GoPro either...

What are your thoughts..?

Can't you just run a cable around the windshield and down to the power point?

Yeah but I need a long USB cable for the GoPro, and this camera fills 32GB in about 5 hours, so it needs to be wiped daily.. again not ideal as a dash cam.
Have some interesting footage though; including a "Jet" fiat punto on the m25. MDF wings and jet engines on the back.
Being stopped by the Army on my way into work just before the games.

Roadhawk are decent, seen a few fleets running them - really good info in the event of an RTC for the insurance and old bill. If you just want a basic cam they start at about £100, going up to about £250 for the all singing all dancing GPS model that records pretty much everything going on at the time (speed, location, g forces, etc).

Depends what you're after really, if you just want to watch it back yourself and record track days etc you'll be aswell sticking with the GoPro and getting a long lead for it. If it's specifically for covering yourself insurance wise a "proper" dash cam will be a lot better.

We had road hawks in my old work vehicles... when they worked they were great but they had an awful failure rate. When I got hit from behind my camera wasn't working (I had reported it that morning) but luckily there was a witness.


I am thinking of getting front and rear view cameras installed. You would never believe what some people will do to get past a learner!

Just remember these things can be used to show what you did wrong too (not that anyone ever does anything wrong, so im told). I have used someones own footage against them, much like these black box telematic things a lot of cars now use for insurance.

Surely, no one would admit to having one, if the info was to be used against them
And if one was spotted on the vehicle, is there a legal right that the camera can be seized against the owners wishes?

I would guess only in a serious crime however if handing over evidence to the police self incriminates you then it goes against your human rights to do so - or so I have been lead to believe

My understanding is that it's illegal to destroy or hide evidence; so if you have the camera and you catch your self doing something wrong and you get caught doing so, then you have to hand over the evidence when/if requested to do so.
If on the other hand you catch an accident on the camera but the footage also shows that you were in the wrong, (i.e. speeding) but were not involved in the accident in any way then you get "Witness protection" meaning that your footage will not be used against you. (Please correct me if you KNOW different :-) )

Does anyone use the Blackvue system? Does this "Park mode" work in the DS3, because the 12V socket turns off with the engine?

If you are involved in a collision, would the cops have the ability to "Seize" any camera in your car against your will - i mean its not their property is it
If its a house- they need a valid warrant, dont they? Or you can refuse entry- if they enter anyway, its illegal?

You would need to wire the system up to a non switched power point. There are power wires in the fusebox that you can tap into to do this.
