I went in but couldn't see Gerard Butler, just a load of Afghans waiting to finish for the weekend.

If you need it, less than your life.

Mine was £600 for 2 x plates, front and back soft armour and the quick release cover. Its always a trade off between mobility and protection so better armour is available but at a cost in weight and manoeuvrability, in my current job a balance is required.

Sorry for the noob questions, so if say one of the plates took a bullet do they need replacing or are they able to be re-used ? The only experience I have with body armour is in Grand Theft Auto games and I don't think it's strictly accurate

Depending on the quality and material used, hard armour (the plate) can normally withstand a number of impacts before losing integrity, it will need to be replaced much in the same way a crash helmet would do. Soft armour can stop low velocity round (subsonic) and fragmentation (again subsonic) but is also designed to absorb much of the energy if a hard plate is struck by a high velocity projectile.

Its not only penetration that can kill and cause injury, kinematics (force/energy) can cause significant internal trauma.

Ignore the films, whilst armour can stop a bullet, its can only partially absorb the energy and a 7.62mm bullet traveling in excess of 2000 feet per second carries a lot of energy.
