Extremely easy and as Mark says, practice, practice, practice is key.
Always use 3M tape to see your results as you go and get a good spot light or led torch.

On a separate note, apologies for not being on here a lot recently. Crazy, crazy busy but always got time for my fellow DS3 owners (for the next 17 days anyway) so please do PM me or email me on cleanyourride@outlook.com and I will get back to you ASAP.

Vinyl bits, if the machine wanders on to them, don't like being polished either. Especially the 3d effect of carbon fibre. goes all dull and scratched.

A new cutting compound and pad seems the next thing to try. Am gonna do a panel or 2 every week so hopefully will get the hang
The machine can be pretty fierce when it get going on level 4ish. don't go any higher
Almost wrenches itself out of your hand

^ From what I can tell I am doing no harm to any panel, and it certainly is shinier than by hand, so might as well keep practising on the actual car panels, rather than get a panel from a breakers... should I not?

You will be as polishing removes the clearcoat. Different polishing compounds have different levels of abrasiveness, depending on what level they're aimed for. What they all do, in differing amounts, is remove some the clear coat which covers the paint. The clear coat protects the paint and body work from damage and corrosion, and if it gets damaged or worn away then the car will start to suffer. It's like sanding down a rough surface of wood, polishing removes layers until it is as low as the biggest scratch (that's simplified but that is what it's supposed to do). Obviously, your car only has a certain amount of clear coat covering the paint, so once it's gone it's gone. Polishing, whether it be by hand or machine, should only really be done once or twice a year at the most and it should only be done if you know what you're doing. Professional detailers will use a paint thickness gauge to tell how much clear coat they've got to play with, and whether or not it's actually possible to fix it without a respray.

Fair enough. Only done the boot lid, rear side panel so far anyway. Ultimate compound, orange pad, then waxed.
Done bonnet twice but tis a 2nd bonnet anyway

Is the fine pad (Black) or white pad used immediately after the orange- therefore going over the same area twice within a few minutes?

Had a mate years ago that owned a spray shop, and he said panels get up to 17 or 18 clear coats when being sprayed
Still- got an orange hex pad on order, and will get some Megs 105 compound and see how I go

The best thing so far Ive learned is how good those clay mitts are. Fab. Couldn't get on with claybar at all

got some megs 105 and 205 on order so will give them a go, and have an orange hex sponge

Ebay were not the cheapest to get the 2 items, and got 2 x 237ml bottles for £23.00. No postage
Cant get it that cheap on ebay

                          Nice post Mark[emoji106]🏻

Chris, the 205 finishing polish used with a black/white pad is fine to use after the 105 with the orange pad.

You may find like I do that after buffing off the 105, it is quite dusty so I always give it a quick hose down and then a pat dry before using the 205.

Glad you liked the clay cloth[emoji106]🏻

Need more advice please. Have got another motor to deal with our car boot days, and it looks worth practising on for a bit of DA polishing. Do you apply pressure when you machine polish? Have read various aticles, some say just the weight of the machine, some say apply a bit of pressure the first couple of passes?
