You will have to apply pressure, and it will vary depending on the compound and pad you're using. The 205 for example, says medium pressure for the first few passes then light pressure for the last couple. This is where experience and practice will come in, as that's the only way you'll find out what medium and light pressure are for you. If you just use the weight of the machine with no extra pressure then you risk losing control of it, as it can snatch and pull away.
