The rain (well sleet) started and out I went. Ignition on, wipers automatically swiped. Push up int INT wipe position, another swipe and Auto symbol vanishes, push down again to 0/Auto and the the auto symbol still invisible and the wipers on 0. To get back into Auto 'flick' down. It might not be at all intuative but it works! Thanks to all

Initially it's a bit weird but you'll quickly get used to it, now you know how it's supposed to work
