Am I right in thinking you would be protected by the statutory 14 day cooling off period? Set up the finance and if the test drive/inspection is no good then don't buy the car.

I would not take delivery and decide it was no good when I got home though. You would be making it harder to get out of the deal that way.

Everything I've read says there is no cooling off period if you do it in person through the dealership so im reluctant to commit to the finance without seeing the car first

If you had one to sell he'd probably tell you there's no demand for them!

By law there is a 14 day cool off with finance.

You have a lot of rights as a consumer by law. If you are not happy, be objective about it face to face, then follow this up in writing, but you will need to reject the car within 30 days in writing and cite why this would be in accordance with the Consumer Guarantees Act. I know all this as i've done it (with a VW!!!).

I hope it doesnt get that far! I wont be accepting the car or putting the finance through until ive test drove it and my mechanic mate has given it the once over!

                  Just good common sense.

Question - What type of salesman doesn't check their mobile or email at least once a day and reply to his customers?

Answer - A bad one of course.

Had a call from the dealer today claiming he's only seen my email this morning as he's been off for 2 days. Again tried to get me in before the end of the month to sign claiming that the only reason they've been able to offer me such a fantastic deal is because its the end of the month!

Told him again i can only get down on Saturdays so if its a deal breaker i'd pop down to get the £250 deposit id put down refunded........all of a sudden holding it until next Sat isnt a problem.

This guy is making me nervous!

Who doesn't have their work email linked to their mobile! The second most expensive thing people buy after a house is their car, so please don't be nervous but remember you are in charge of the purchase and he should be going out of his way to make it work for you, not the other way around

Update: had another call from the dealer today saying the car had arrived and its a beauty apparently! He again tried to get me to come in before month end and I again said I couldnt.

10 mins later, another phone call 'we have a problem'. That deal is only offered as its month end, so i said 'ok i'll pop in on Sat to get my deposit back', suddenly Saturday is fine!

20 mins later, text message asking if theres anything else they can do to close it before month end!

I was furious by this point, but after thinking about it that last text message has shown his hand, so think im going to call tomorrow and see exactly how far he's prepared to go to close this by month end!

Another update: So after texting the dealer back last night telling him to ring me this morning to discuss the incentives (which he acknowledged), I got a text at 8am today saying the car was being serviced and valeted for tomorrow and to let him know what time I'd be in.

I replied to say we'd not agreed to come in as we were waiting to discuss the incentive he'd mentioned and I again asked him to ring me at 9am. He replied to say he wasn't in today hence why he was testing but said he'd speak to the sales manager and get back to me.

At this point I showed my hand and said I wanted my current DS3 (which is on a lease deal) servicing and MOT'ing for free as the incentive for me to go in tomorrow, which he flat out refused, so I said I'd see him on Sat.

So in actual fact he's offered no incentive to sign before the end of the month, and at this point I almost feel bullied into this deal.

I've posted the specifics of the deal in another thread, and unless someone says it's a great deal I'm severely tempted to walk away even if it means losing the £250 we've already paid.

My approach to him right now would be along the lines of:

"Arrange this into a well-known phrase or saying: 'stuffed' 'get'"

Whose interests is he there to serve - his or yours?
