I bargained and got supaguard, baguettes, GAP and a full tank of diesel.
I think the ability to barter for stuff has almost dissappeared these days. Once over if you were buying a car for cash you could get a load knocked off, but recently my dad went to buy a car and they told him it would be £100 if he paid cash!! Crazy

I worked out the price with one of the on-line discounters for the same configuration. I never discussed price until the day I agreed to go in and sign the paperwork. On the day I simply gave the quote to the salesman and asked if he could match it. He took it to the sales manager and 10 minutes later he was back. The couldn't match the on-line deal but I got the car for £14,100, which was about £850 less than list.
As I was buying from dealer stock as opposed to waiting 12 weeks I was pretty happy with the deal!

Oh no you see the thing is they have literally offered nothing apart from the floor mats. Certainly not a discount! They offer freebies on top of discounts?!? You must be kidding! Literally, if they were to just offer something in good faith, (aside from floor mats that pretty much come as standard anyway), we'd have signed on the dotted line by now. I'm certainly not wasting their time, and we must be literally the least hassle customers. They must have spent a total of an hour talking to us?! We're relatively young, and look younger, and reckon they think we don't realise when we are being served a line quite frankly!!

Well, you need to be prepared to be a little cheeky when buying a car. Don't be afraid to just say - 'That deal isn't working for us, what can you knock off the price?'
I think your safest bet is to ask that dealer what's the lowest price they can do it for.
Take this price to another garage and ask if they can beat it. You'll be surprised what they can do to clinch a sale!

"Some will, some won't, so what, move on"
At the end of the day as a dealer I need to be ethical about how I deal in order to secure my future in my job, yes I could quite easily thrown everything away and sell cars at cost but that would put my dealership out of business fasting then a whippet out of a trap.
When a deal is being made it has to be a 'win / win' for both parties otherwise the deal is pointless, this is the building blocks of any business. Granted there will always be dealers who 'have' to buy their business but you need to ask yourself why? I know we can spend days arguing back and forth about how to do this or do that and yes there are cheaper places to buy cars, but I offer a service with the buying process which unfortunately doesn't come for free. I know that there are dealers out there who do have their eyes shut to the future and for me I can't imagine how customers would react if there was no dealer network and you could only buy your car from the Internet with no ability to view or try out a possible purchase.

For me though, I just like to make sure they're not taking liberties with it though.
(i.e. Making enough £££ to have a nice profit, then sticking a few hundred extra on)

If he says a figure and is truly willing to lose the sale rather than go lower than that figure, then that is the fair profit.
Also it wouldn't be a set amount. It would vary widely from dealer to dealer. If a dealer sells a lot of cars then generally he could afford to make a smaller profit off each car.Last edited by x6411; 08-06-2011, 14:23.

By side step do you mean I avoided saying what a fair profit is?
I think there must be some truth to my reply?
i.e.
A certain garages costs are £2000 per month.. (not realistic I know)
The garage sells 10 cars in that month. To break even the garage needs to make £200 from each car..
Another garages costs are £4000 per month..
The garage sells 40 cars.. To break even the garage needs to make £100 from each car..
The second garage can afford to sell the car at a lower price because they need less money from that car to break even? So the fair amount they add on to the cost of the car would be lowerLast edited by x6411; 08-06-2011, 15:24.
