Indicated MPG

I've been using that Fuelly.com website for the last month or so, and its alarming at how far out the reading the cars gives compared to the exact figures!

Last tank car says 36.6mpg - actual figure is 31mpg!

The trip computer on my focus showed 50mpg average on a tank, worked it out at 52, not often I've seen one be under reading, still hoping the ds3 beats that

The trip computer on our DS3 is to be honest is normally on the mark. Forget using websites best thing to do is do it yourself, but to try to remember that MPG is not an exact science as I've said before, there are too many 'factors' which all have an effect on the final figure.

The way to work it out for yourself;

1.) Brim the tank to an agreed number of clicks and reset the trip counter
2.) Drive to until you need fuel again and refuel the tank to the same number of clicks
3.) Note the amount of litres you have put in and the mileage off the trip counter
4.) Convert the litres to gallons (divide the litres by 4.546) and note this number
5.) Now divide the trip mileage by the number of gallons (the number above)
6.) The final number you end up with is an average MPG for your car.

e.g

Used 48 litres over 350 miles;

48/4.546 = 10.559

350/10.559 = 33.14

33.14 = average MPG over this period

Mine's usually within 2% or so of the actual consumption, usually slightly over but occasionally under. Allowing for variations in filling & the way the trip computer calculates consumption, I'd say it's as near spot-on as you're going to get.

Mines dreadful. Fill the tank up and it says 360 miles left, use say a quarter of a tank and then it says 400 miles left.

But does your DS3 get anything like the mpg that Citroen says it can get?
I have a HDI-90 Airdream and it does 54-56 mpg extra urban, nothing like the 88 mpg they claimed it would. Actually written on the side of my car when I bought it at the dealer.
I've had some problems with the doors and I've been given Loaner cars by Citroen, thank you, but be it a C3, C4 or a DS3 HDI-110 they've all done the same 54-56 mpg. Where does the 'Airdream' come in to this?
Checking my tank fill up with the computer was pretty close, about 2mpg less.
What mileage do you guys average?

248 mile trip done on Friday, rarely dropped below 80mph and was 38.6 or something mpg (120 petrol).

You'll never get the book guidelines. Driving style, road conditions etc etc will impact it. And if your car starts and says it has 100 miles left, you'll gain or lose miles depending on how you drive, in my case I lose lots

I find the mpg in the car is 10mpg less all the time whn I work it out.

The 'range' is worked out 'on the fly' so a raise in the indicted 'range' mileage is not uncommon, all the car is saying 'if you carry on at that speed and revs you should in theory go this far.'

In my experience there is no way on earth a DS3 will make 88 MPG, in a lab with controlled conditions yes but not in the real world, an Airdream version at best will do around 65mpg on a combined cycle.

There has already been a few thread about MPG and as I already said in the real world there are far too many factors affecting fuel use, even the weight of the driver has bearing!

The Airdream moniker is used by Citroen to indicate the greenest model in the line up.
