  • Fast 110 hdi?

Is it me or is my dsport hdi bloody quick. With only 110bhp on tap i should not be pushed back in my seat on accelerating or overtaking as fast as i can.Have Citroen boosted the turbo or modified the engine for the ds3,are gear ratios different on the six speed box.....im puzzled.Granted my last car was a Kia Soul with an126 bhp diesel but that thing is SLOW compaired to my DSport. Is there anybody out there who could explain this to me in plain english ta.

Horsepower is a way to measure to output of an engine where torque is a way to measure the muscle of the engine. You can go into very long winded explanations which tend to confuse most people who ask.

As you will know Horsepower is measure as BHP, torque is normally measure as Nm/RPM, which is Newton Metres/Revolutions per minute, by the manufactures but people normally refer to torque as Ib.Ft (Pounds feet).

The THP 155 kicks out 240 Nm ( 177 Ib.Ft) when the revs reach 1400, this is what kicks you in the back!

The HDi 110 kicks out 270 Nm (199 Ib.Ft) when the revs reach 1750, this difference in the power is what makes up for the shortfall in BHP

Hope that helps a little - tried to avoid going to technical!

            Bigfeet, your explanation is not quite true or you have oversimplified it a bit as horsepower and torque are directly linked. Very simply, horsepower is torque x rpm. I may have to go a bit more technical but;

Torque is the twsting force produced by the engine.

Power is the torque produced by the engine or twisting force measured over a distance (in this case per revolution of the crankshaft) over time.

Horsepower is directly proportional to torque they are not really 2 separate things. The more torque you produce and the higher you rev your engine the more power the engine will produce.

This is why diesels feel fast, as at low revs which most of us drive at normally they are producing more power than an equivelent petrol.

So in this case the 110HDI will be making more power through some of the rev range than the THP. But the overall work done and power produced by the THP will make it faster when the full rev ranges are used. Sorry if that got a bit technical.

Mine is not run in fully yet but pleased with the accelaration as well. Only a second slower than my 2.0FSI Leon.

              Also 2000rpm at 70mph

My 110HDi is just 12 months old and power delivery is smooth and the car always feels peppy.

I note that Citroen changed from a 16V engine to a 8V engine in the last 12 months to reduce CO2's - anyone know how this affects performance?

I know I oversimplified it as many people end up doing the 'google eyes' when you start getting technical!

Your explanation is very good though. Rep for you sir!

Who needs a 110? Another member wanted to know what engine I had in the new car as I pulled away from his sport. Come on the 90!

Its nippy but it sure aint fast. Anyone else find that the 110 bogs down quite often? quite a bit of lag. Its nice when the turbo kicks in but under that torque band there is nothing. Its embarrassed me a few times.

With a bit of judicious use of the gears you can harness that acceleration sweet spot throughout the speed range on the HDi110 and see off lesser vehicles such as M*n*s and *lf*s. If you are in lane 3 on the motorway at 70 and some idiot decides to attempt to climb up your exhaust pipe you can very quickly put some stopping distance between yourself and the tail-gater.

Also a great car for the swift overtake on a windy road.

I like my 90 hp but it does get bogged down if the revs drop.
