  • HDi 110 poor MPG

Few gremlins are cropping up now but I'll get to them in a min, first of all I'm a bit concerned about the economy, or lack of, on my 110. It's never been what I'd call amazing, averaging 34 during the first 2000 miles. I must stress at this stage that the majority of my driving is in town, although the car does warm up fully. I expected it to be a bit lower than average with the tight engine and town driving, but not that low. A trip from Somerset to Shropshire saw the average increase into the 60's which put a smile on my face, but since then it's going downhill. Last tank only lasted 367 miles, this was with mixed driving including a few long runs. I think the most I've ever had out of a tank full is around 440 miles. It now has over 3,500 miles on it so would consider it more than run in by now. I haven't got a lead foot, don't thrash it but I don't drive like a Micra driver either. I tend to change gear just after the gear indicator comes up as I found this has helped a bit.
As someone who has had 42 mpg out of a 2.8 5 series BMW and was getting an average 46 mpg out of a brick shaped Peugeot 806 HDi with a buggered injector, I can't convinced myself that it's my driving style.
Now, I'm not sure on this so maybe some of you can help, how noisy are these e-HDi engines? Mine sounds a tad harsh at times but the one thing I've noticed is a metallic rattle under acceleration. Seems to be worse under gentle acceleration but is present whenever the car is pulling. Some of the older viewers would liken the noise to "pinking", the pre detonation noise you used to get with petrol engines ran on low grade fuel or with the timing out.
    Any views on this?

Other gremlins popping up are my auto wipers are deciding to wipe on really hot days at random times. First time it happened was on a dual carriageway, so I thought it may have been all the bugs committing suicide that was confusing the sensor. It's happened at a standstill since though, so I've ruled that one out.
Other one is the bluetooth, it's gone mental. Was working fine, in fact it was amazing. Would connect to my phone automatically as soon as I got in the car and connected calls no problem. All of a sudden, it's started locking up if I accept a call or make one. It shuts the radio down, puts up an error warning but when I check the log it's empty, and just sits there emitting loud beeps. You can try to end the call, you can try to switch everything off, you can take the keys out, lock the car and run a mile away, it still sits there with a locked up display and emitting more beeps than an episode of Jeremy Kyle. Only way I've found to stop it is to turn off the bluetooth on my phone which is a new Samsung Galaxy Ace if it makes a difference. Do you think it's the car, the phone or is Gordon Ramsey trapped in the electrics somewhere?

Other than that, I love it...

Take it to be looked at as the mpg should be better and ehdi engines are quite quiet. No pinking.

I was concerned when I first got it but everyone said it'll get better, I think it's actually getting worse.

If it makes you feel any better in my THP I only usually get about 330miles

Just thought of a few things I hadn't mentioned. It has a pretty bad flat spot when pulling away, quite a major one which leaves you either playing safe and waiting or really picking the revs up and slipping the clutch. Other thing is it seems quite gutless really. When I went for test drives, they didn't have a DS3 diesel in so I drove the C4 90 HDi. That pulled like a train and felt pretty quick. My reckoning was that a smaller car with more BHP would feel quicker, but it certainly doesn't..

If mine was a THP I would be happy with that. The whole reason I chose the HDi was the economy.

This does not sound right - my 90 (remapped to 120) has just returned 56.2 mpg from a full tank with some serious thrashing of it!

                Get it looked at!

doesn't sound right to me either i would get it along and put on decent RR with diagnostics i agree with the flat spot often have to catch mine pulling away when changing into second and its not my driving style deffo a glitch in the map, will be getting mine chipped and K&N in any case as soon as i can afford but more than happy with my MPG (or litres per 100 km in my case)

Certainly need to get it checked out. Getting 47mpg around town in mine and averaging 62mpg on motorways.

I can average about 39mpg in my thp when I'm being careful.
@dangerousfish yours is remapped yeah. Not really that bad if you're not driving like a granny.

Correct, custom remap from Viezu. I don't have the lightest of feet either... At a push I can get it up to around 37.

Are you getting any sign of smoke or soot blow out the back?

I agree. My mpg is pretty much the same as AJ's.

got a hdi 90, get it warm and upto speed and you will cruise on the motorway at an easy 60. have got 60mpg and 600 miles out of a tank but any hard acceleration ruins it all. now the speed restrictions on my commute have gone i can do 70 through a 7 mile stretch that was 50, effect on my mpg commuting is about 5 mpg less. cruising at 50 your looking at about 80 mpg and i think those miles averaged the rest of the trip which is all hard accelerating.
