  • Car Tracker???

    Hi All

Following reading "Towards an unstealable object", it got me thinking...

Is it worth fitting a tracker to new cars?

I've got a tracker system fitted to my current car courtesy of the previous owner, but I've never bothered to activate it due to the cost versus the value of the car...
However on a brand new £18k car, that Cost/Value skew is substantially different...

So, what do you guys/gals think? Anyone got a tracker fitted? Anyone had first hand experience of the benefits of a tracker system?

    Cheers
    Gavin

    Hi Gavin,
I am a nurse now but in a former life I was a traffic policeman! Needless to say I have vast experience of recovering stolen vehicles using the tracker system. I think the best one I remember was an activation at 1007hrs and my colleague and I were directed to the vehicle and had it recovered and 3 thieves in custody by 1023hrs in a petrol station vehicle recovered undamaged and 3 less villains on the streets for 2 years each! RESULT!
So, in short yes they do work. Not sure About costings nowadays but I am going to get a tracker for my spanking new ds3 as soon as I can. I think there is also an annual subscription for the service but many insurance companies offer discounts to vehicles with trackers so this saving may offset the cost of te annual subscription not to mention the hassle of having no car cos some lowlife has pilfered your pride and joy!
Hope my ramblings and anecdotes have helped
    Regards
    Paul

Cheers for that, good to know...

The annual subscription was what put me off last time, however there's more reward there this time me thinks

Will see what I can find

Hmm, doesn't appear to make much difference on the insurance from the quick web quote I've done...

Only dropped the premium by 2%

Will have to give current insurer a call and see what they say...

          Flaming heck!
          2%?!
Is that it bloody robbing gits. Suppose it's better than nothing tho and you have the piece of mind knowing that you should get your car back relatively undamaged or not at all. I'm gonna have a quick skeg around the web to see what's available.
          Thanks for the feedback folks

Just checked out the 'TRACKER' site and for the tracker locate it is around £470 for the device including installation plus £174/annum for subs. If you do a 3 year sub it is £399 for the lot which works out at around £11/month
Phew. Need to think about this one methinks

For that sort of money I'd want a hefty discount on my insurance, after all they will benefit by not having to payout if your car is recovered because you had the tracker fitted.
DS3 Racing, also available in White!!!

Exactly, the cost is starting to outweigh the benefits, on a financial basis atleast...
Would love to have peace of mind that my car could be recovered if the worst happened, but still gotta make financial sense

Will give my insurance company a call and see what they say

They'll probably say that they 'already offer the best deals around' and 'just because u have a tracker doesn't actually stop your car being stolen' and possibly 'we do offer a "generous" discount for customers who have a tracker'!
                  I'm thinking twice now lol

The old tracker system has had its day. You want a gps based system. You can get DIY ones off the Internet.

I think you need to do a bit of shopping around...

Tracker locate is both gps and gsm based apparently. The advantage that tracker has is that every traffic police car and also incident response vehicle has a tracker receiver so in my opinion I would still go with tracker

Maybe they only offer a small discount as this reflects the success rate of cars being recovered undamaged via the tracking system?
