(PULL is multiple wash/wipe
DOWN is auto on.....but not off??,
UP is intermittent---which is what I'm using instead of a flick,
and as auto off?!)

Hesitation. Almost always around 2500-3000rpm I suddenly loose power for a sec or so.

My 115hdi has done this and have genuinely found it only happened when filling my tank at our local Tesco's. Stopped filling up there and no more hesitation??????

Down gives a single flick wipe; the first time it switches auto on, but it will still give a single wipe on subsequent down-flicks. Having auto switched on is no problem - in fact it may well do the occasional single wipe for you, saving the bother of having to flick the stalk!
