anyone have a road angel or something similar and know if there worth it or any good?
Perhaps it depends on the model then ? My GoLive 1000 and the fiancee's one (can't remember the model) both do it, from memory it's under the settings/display options I think..... with mine there is so much stuff it can do I get lost in the settings
Ive been told they do display speed-but been thru the manual and cant find it
No doubt its there somewhere
if anyone can enlighten me (lfc) then its a Tom Tom Go 710
My previous one was a TomTom Go 910 (same generation as your 710). It definitely displayed speed and speed limits. I'll try and dig it out for you and find out where the display settings are.

To set which information is displayed, tap Status bar, preferences, in the Preferences menu
I did also see that your Device may not display full menu options
Hidden buttons and features
When you first start using your TomTom GO, not all the buttons will be shown in the menu.
Many buttons and some more advanced features are hidden because you will not need these features very often.
To show all buttons and features, tap Show ALL menu options in the Preferences menu.
To hide these buttons again, tap Show fewer menu options in the Preferences menu
If you haven't done this you might now be able to see more of the display options

I found and tried my 910 this morning and it's unfortunately died.
Looks like before I could reply, lfcrule1972 has found the answer anyway.

My Tomtom One died too, battery wont charge, so device won't turn on. Found a website that supplies satnav batteries, replaced the battery and all worked again.

I've bought a new one since. I only found it again recently when I moved house.
Edit: A quick search revealed it's actually quite cheap to get it fixed so I'll probably do that and sell it.
Thanks for the help all- now got MPH displayed
All I have to do is solve the fact that I cant reach a destination by postcode now
3 week ago, cos my satnav was taking up to 10 mins to find satellite, software was upgraded on the Tom Tom site. Hadnt done it for years
Then these problems have started- even deleted the voice somehow, and had to buy another voice £3
Postcode destination now don't work, and it beeps and does all sorts of things it never used to, which is disconcerting
Conspiracy theorist me- soon as you software update it balls things up, by deleting things to make room for the new software, hoping you will go buy a new one
Cant be beaten, and will battle on LOL
Reading up on Tom Tom site, you have to download a file or something (More complicated than just an upgrade tho)
Always did work- as said, when upgrading software who knows whether the postcode bit was deleted to make room
My experience of TomTom support is very good, drop them an email/contact from their pages and explain the issue, they will come back with basic step by steps to resolve it
NB Sorted- go to Tom Tom website and after a bit of searching, find full UK postcode files, and saved to computer, then copied to the device. Reckon it was deleted on previous software update
Back on the speed display issue - I've no experience of Tom Tom but I've heard they're good (Had researched Tom Tom and Garmin as alternatives and was about to buy a Tom Tom a while back, then my daughter bought me a Garmin for Christmas!). I'm now v. pleased with my Garmin.
Mine isn't either top of the range or a recent model (its a Nuvi 250w for those to whom that means anything!) but it does everything I need it to (not traffic though). As described in an earlier post above for Tom Tom, it displays the speed and the current speed limit if there is one - also warns if you exceed the limit (the speed limit indicator changes from grey to red and a chime sounds every few seconds, though I run with the chime switched off).
On the subject of speed trap detectors - aren't they illegal in the UK?
