  • What type of petrol?!

Got my new DSport a few weeks back & absolutely love it!

I was just wondering what petrol people fill up with & whether using more expensive types is worth it?

I spoke to a mate who's a mechanic & he said the more expensive ones arent really worth the cash??

BP Ultimate- Burns cleaner LOL (So they claim) is my fave, as engine seems to run smoother
Have tried standard supermarket (Rubbish) and Tesco Momentum, (Higher ethanol) and Shell V-Power
Whatever.....try not use RON 95 for long periods
Just IMO obviously, but read the mags and they recommend too

THP engines seem picky enough. You should use as clean as possible... or then you can always keep rebuilding pistons :P

^ ^ ^ ^ Definitely agree. Why get a decent motor and fill it with rubbish fuel anyways

"The engine is the heart of your car. So you want it to go on working as good as new - giving you the best possible performance and fuel economy.

But harmful deposits build up rapidly in engines run on inferior fuels, preventing them from operating as efficiently and performing as they were designed to.

BP Ultimate Unleaded and BP Ultimate Diesel have up to five times the cleaning strength of ordinary fuels. Not only can they prevent the build-up of deposits, they are formulated to clean away existing ones, making your engine feel and run much more like new again.

Our Ultimate fuels don’t just clean. They protect your engine too, working all the time you drive to prevent deposits from forming, and guarding against corrosion and wear."

          I remember reading this a while back - http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/...2713301&page=2

As always you'll always get arguments for both sides, previously I've only used the cheapest fuel (Shell, Tesco etc whichever had the deal on) but I decided this week to run a 3 tank experiment to see if I notice any difference with the Shell V Power Nitro fuel.... If I do I'll post back !

No worries, previously I've only tried a tank at a time and not noticed any real difference between the fuels, supposedly three fills on Shell V Power Nitro and I will !

If I want to try a premium petrol, do I have to wait until my tanks almost empty or can I brim my tank thats already half full of Tesco standard petrol?

I used to have a Renault Magane - I was going to Devon on Holiday So i Treated it to a tank of Shell v-Power

I don't know what happened , or weather i got a bad batch of Fuel , but the car wouldn't accelerate going up hills - Generally Sluggish on Roads/Motorways , it took me a few days on holiday to use most of it , on the way back it got a tank of Normal Petrol and after about 2 weeks of running on it - it managed to burn the bad batch of Shell v-power Fuel!

has anyone had this before with any fuel ?

Would suggest get near to empty as poss, for a true check on any difference
Been told 6 tanks is best, as the ECU takes a while to get used to slight alterations in fuel burn

Expect one of the petrol giants suggested 6 tanks LOL

I used to run vpower or other premium fuels in my cooper s GP but since moving to a standard cooper s and now a ds3 thp I've stuck with standard fuel. The better fuels won't help with coking as the engines are direct injection and the fuel doesn't touch the back of the valves. If you do switch to high octane fuels it'll take at least 3 full tanks before the engine management catches up and you start seeing any benefit.

Ok, so if I leave it until the tanks almost empty, whats the best fuel to go for? BP, Shell etc?

When my sports exhaust was fitted first time round, the tuners said "All the boys at Santa Pod use V-Power"
But personally preferred the BP Ultimate me, which is recommended by Quentin Wilson, Daily Mirror, but also had a long chat with BP guys at Goodwood last year. It seems a little smoother
Used Tesco Momentum for a bit, (RON 99)but was told its just boosted by ethanol which (Apparently) is not good long term

Pays your money and takes you choice I suppose

Yes, the fuel does not touch valve backs directly. But it matters how much and what kind of fumes get in touch with the valve backs.
I was running the whole summer on pure E85 which seemed to collect crap on injectors and/or valves and caused various weird engine codes, misfiring, rough idle etc. Changed to RON98 and used a bottle of both LiquidMoly valve cleaner and injector cleaner, something happened as catch can was filled up with tar like black substance and all symptoms went away after few tanks of RON98.

                            Now I am running on 50-75% E85 and 25-50% RON98.

Hi, I'm glad ur enjoying ur Sport , I love mine I was told from the day I got her (Nov 2011) not to use Supermarket fuel . Where I live it's Tesco or Jet n wasn't happy with Jet, so I do a 15 mile round trip to buy her BP Ultimate n she runs beautifully on that . When she went to Citroen with "diesel judder" , I asked if it was worth the trip for BP n was told by Head Mechanic that it is worth it cos it helps the filter discharge ?? n performance/acceleration should be slightly better, could also find mpg is better . Gotta say she does 48mpg round town so I'm not complaining n I get double Nectar points on Ultimate so 15 mile trek it is
