  • Telling Insurance

Hi guys, so I've been in contact with Jamie @ SP Tuning and planning to have my car remapped. However after speaking to numerous insurance companies, the price will increase from £600 a year to £1500! And that's with 3 years NCB. So my question is, could they tell that the car is remapped? I've got a motorbike that has race exhaust and all sorts of mods that I've risked, but with a car I'm just not sure. I'd they can't tell then I'll definitely be getting it done

Boah insurance in UK is damn expensive.
I've spoken with my insurance and they just want to know what I've done and want to see the MOT papers but they won't raise their price.

Unless they actually check the ECU, it's very unlikely they would be able to detect it was remapped. Saying that, if they did detect it and you didn't report it, you'd invalidate your insurance and be up a creek without a paddle.

I would wait until the price comes down or try other things to reduce your insurance. Adding a parent or partner as a named second driver will usually drop it down a bit.

Insurance isn't just about you. It covers others too.

In the event you're in an accident regardless of fault your car needs to be insured to save the unfortunate person(s) involved from having to jump through all the hoops such as the MIB to ensure they're compensated fairly.

If the cost to insure a modified vehicle is too much at present then I would suggest waiting until you have a little more driving experience under your belt before making any undeclared modifications. The insurance company are likely quoting such as massive increase because of evidence they have that cars such as yours when modified are likely to be involved in more accidents.

        To answer your question:

It's very unlikely that your insurers would investigate to see if the car has been remapped in the event of an accident but that doesn't mean that they wouldn't! I'd imagine they could easily see when the ECU was last written to and if they really wanted to, they could then send the ECU off to be investigated by Citroen and void your insurance.

TL;DR - Save your money and wait until your insurance falls before modifying your vehicle.

Sure you don't want a moral lecture so I wont (You know it makes sense being legal)

Point of my post is don't give up. They wanted about an extra £1grand from me when I remapped the THP and first went for an upgrade to my existing insurance (Kwikfit I think)

So was gonna remove the map. Ended up looking away from the comparision websites as they don't cover 50% of insurers, and ended yup with £50 more than my annual premium (Elephant I think)

          Keep trying

I informed my insurer when I changed wheels even though the rim and tyre size was unchanged, the premium remained the same but they did thank me for my honesty!

So after shopping around think it's fair to say I can't afford to get it done. It would be cheaper to get insured on a fiesta St than it would be a 125 bhp diesel Ds3. Insurance logic

We've all been stung by it one time or another.

£1500 to insure my DS3 when I first bought it. Current MX-5 insurance is £400 just 5 years on.

As Chris said above though, shop around. I've made changes to vehicles in the past and had the insurance add it on without qualm and others have only charged a small premium (~£30/yr). It just takes time and the right bit of luck to find a reasonable insurance quote.

Mine is about £300 fully comp, but then again i've had a clean license for 31 years .

As Chris mentions about comparison sites, dont be fooled, 99% of the time they only feature companies who have paid to be on there.

Did you try Chris Knott Insurance (details on the forum) ? My wife and I used them to get cheaper insurance this year and I declared the remap (as I'd done previously with Aviva) although I do have 11+ years NCD.

Have you tried us for insurance yet? We have access to several modified car schemes that this may fall under. Drop me a line and I'd be happy to arrange a quotation for you.

                      Kind Regards

Yes and you guys quoted me £1500 which is madness for 125bhp diesel. I just dont understand how I can get insured on a car with almost 200bhp cheaper than a Ds3 with a mod. Or if I was to look at another car with 130 bhp I could get insured for about 700 a year.

I just found the same when looking for an insurance quote on an Audi S1, although it has 231bhp the annual premium on a 2016 is £60+ less than my 2013 eHDi with a remap to 145bhp

It does appear that modded cars are more expensive than cars with more power as standard.

My 300 bhp R is only £100 or so more than my last THP 155, and could have got it cheaper if I fitted a tracker. Fitted my own tracker in the end

Tuning box to take to 355bhp insurance starts at £1k.

                              No insurers like modified cars.
