  • THP Remap, unexpected figures...

Hey guys, been a member for a while but this is my first post.
Had my THP for 2 years now and decided to go for the remap by a local reputable tuner, I've installed the MTC induction kit and Airtec intercooler in prep for this. Watching the dyno in progress I was a bit confused as the BHP was showing as 110-120 on the test runs and dismissed at first and thought "eh, must be just some testing or something" but turns out my car was making 123bhp before the map. After the map, it made 170bhp and 266 Nm, which is still almost 50bhp increase from what it was and definitely noticeable after driving it today but nowhere near the expected 195bhp and 300nm that was quoted by them (OMW Tuning), Comkotes and Velocity Tuning who are also well known in my area.

Now, the tuner said it was common for this car and the Cooper S to make nowhere near the quoted factory power due to the "turbo running out of puff" and intake temps starting at 23 degrees and reaching 45+ towards the end. Could it be due to another issue like an iffy fuel pump, clogged injectors or boost leak? The timing chain was replaced with new plugs last year and have had the valves de-carbonised about 8 months ago so shouldn't be impacting already?

(Also anyone debating the Airtec intercooler, I bought the one for the diesel and it fits perfectly and saved myself ?150)
    Thanks Guys!

    Hey Skinnykinny2 ,

The stock figures your car pushed out before the tuning seems like clogged up intake valves, short distance driving and driving below 3000 rpm can cause quicker carbon build up. Also i would recommend you should put the highest octane fuel that is available in the car. You can feel a failing HPFP when you're driving and the car begins to stutter, thats a beginning of a failing HPFP which are quite common to fail on the THP engines.

I've attached my performance sheet of my first stage 2 tuning, i was running decat + forge air intake + airtec intercooler(petrol) + boost pipes + forge occ. With those upgrades i was running 193 hp and 315nm.

      Yes, all you say

Could be turbo problems, injectors, HPFP and mainly the inlet valves need a real good walnut blasting

Nothing other than a walnut blasting seems to clear the carbonisation properly

Do you get any stuttering when acceleration- IE: Accerate hard, uphill, then drop the gears. If it splutters then intake vlaves are your problem

Assume your exhaust is all good- a sportscat helps

I was getting 195BHP from my THP 155 with upgraded Exhaust, Sportscat (Those added bout 11 BHP) then the remap with sports air filter

A few other bits and pieces like catch can, and vented bonnets and stuff, but think they just helped rather than created performance

Chris_Blue DS3-NL Thanks for the tips. I’ve got a res delete but that’s about as far as I’m going with exhausts. Got a 4 year old brother and another baby coming in September so have to be somewhat respectful with the noise there’s been no stuttering at all, pulls strong through the revs; did have stuttering and an engine light flash up and fan come on but that was the cam sensor (?) I think, was last year and was fixed and since then it’s been good. So I’m assuming only way to get more power with my map is exhaust?
Only issue with the walnut blasting is no one close to me offers, a BMW specialist turned me down despite mentioning it’s the same engine, still wouldn’t touch it.
has anyone had any experience with the stuff you put into the fuel tank when it’s almost empty or is it a load of baloney?

I always put 98 RON fuel in my THP's, but still ended up needing the inlet valves cleaned after 18k miles in one case

Not sure a catch can helped much, but it did remove some oil

                Hey Skinnykinny2 ,

Im not a fan of adding additives to the engine/fuel tank because it can cause bigger problems, it's strange that a BMW specialist turned down your DS3, didnt they even inspected your car for the "possible" carbon build up on your inlet valves?. The N14/18 engines which are in the Mini's are quite the same engine's. As Chris_Blue said about installing a OCC on your car, i think its definitely worth it to buy one for the PCV Vacuum/Boost side of your engine. It reduces carbon build up alot and keeps the nasty oil out of your engine. I am running currently a dual setup. Forge OCC(Boost side) and GT Tuning OCC(Vacuum side). Which works perfect for me

i experianced similar "problems" with my thp. prior remap i decated it, alu intake hoses, FMIC, GFB DV, 2,5" exhaust,...
With this setup could not get near 155ps. looked everything (DV, sparkplugs, DP,..)...but the turbocharger. At the end checked the turbo too, found a nice pease of crack in exchaust part of turbo, also exchaust manifold was cracked.
after replacing turbocharger and manifold, dyno showed 150ps and 240Nm torque. after that it was ready for remap

I had the same issue with my DS3 stage 1, 123whp standard and 187whp stage 1, then i used archoil ar6400 with Tesco premium only and re dyno'd for 193whp then went to stage 2 at 204.8whp
