A smaller Antenna will never be as good at receiving radio waves as a longer one unless the system is designed with additional features.. :P It's all to do with the size of the wavelength being received but I fear I would bore you to death if I go into any more detail....

Okay bare with me. (Praying your not a radar or radio expert.)

To reduce the power used to transmit Radio waves now a days they are broadcast as 1/4 wave lengths, this is possible as all radio waves are essentially sine waves. Therefore will be symmetrical from 90 degrees to 180. And 180 degrees to 360 will be symmetrical to the wave at 0-180.
                      Something like this.
The antenna or your aerial in this case Receives the transmitted quarter wavelength and uses a ground plane (A solid conductive area, your roof in this scenario,) to mirror the other quarter of the wavelength. Shortening the Ariel will have the effect of not receiving the the full 1/4 wavelength and the reflection will be of an incomplete wave causing your poor reception. Of cause you can artificially lengthen an antenna, (meaning a shorter aerial with the same receiving capabilities, such as the UHF radio system on aircraft, which tend to have wire coiled around a drum that can be extended or shortened as necessary.)

That's what I would imagine is happening... I'm not a radio expert though.

Hmm didn't know that about the 1/4 wavelength but it does make perfect sense.
