SMD does indeed stand for surface mounted device but that is in reference to the actual led element. It does not have "prongs" on it that would go through holes in the mounting surface and then be soldered; like a traditional circuit board. SMD leds are soldered directly to the surface of the whatever you are putting them on. So you could actually have a device with SMD leds that would need to be wired instead of plugged in.

AFAIK should be no impact on warranty. I have LED sides in, and will leave them in when 1st service due
But you could always swap the originals back in, if theres any issues that need the car returning to dealer
I find with LED sides that they look nice, but not even Halogen OEM lamps throw any light out. The DRLs are better for that
does those eBay ones go striaght in? no need for adapters or converters?
Yep - just a straight swap - only thing to check is that they are the right way around as they are polarized - I got 1 right and 1 wrong first time when I did mine. The leds are much easier to fit than the main and dipped bulbs which have clips and so are a little trickier - I swapped my mains for osram nightbreakers and am pleased with the results.
