      It is not unusual for a diesel engine to take a while to warm up, especially when just left idling on the driveway. Modern diesel engines are thermally efficient, especially compared to a petrol engine. The downside being that not much heat is generated until it's actually been driven.

      However, after 5 - 10 mins of idling, there will be enough warmth from the heater, relative to the ice on your windscreen, to start to melt it.
