I had a Vauxhall corsa hire car, the gei went up and down, mine just goes up

Every car is different, Mini's tell you to go up and down aswell. You'll only want it to tell you when to change down if you don't know how to drive properly haha

I was intrigued by this statement and also by the fact I get bored of you lot whining like school girls ( ) that I spoke with Technical. Yes you can indeed switch the GEI off but it is not a 10 minute job. It will involve reprogramming the on board BSI, both keys, the transponder code and at least an hours labour.

So yes you can turn this off but it really worth it?

I've got a problem with the stick thing, when I push it up or down a green arrow flashes on my dash and it makes a funny noise can anyone help

Don't know about that, just saw the option diagbox a few days back. Didn't try to turn it off
