    It's a Turbo noise reducer.

Looks like an Oil breather pipe should be connected to it. possibly a PCV valve

I'm assuming you mean the bit that the hose to the right should be attached to? I'm going with Toxic's answer ^

Ditto - I was about to post a pic the same as the one Shiro just posted. The "clean bit" is where the hose should be!

If you look further to the right it also looks like OP has disconnected the induction hose too - I think he's aware the hose is unclipped

it is a PCV/Breather, problem is it dumps smokey oil into the intake by the looks of it and coats the insides with oil, possibly including the Turbo viens.

It`s the Fun Factory or the Bay of Doom depending on how much work is needed to fix it!

Yeah I think I'm going to have to buy a catch can. It's fucking disgusting the amount of oil it kicks out over 3000 miles. Anyone any advice what I should flush the intercooler with to remove any potential oil?

A catch can for a Diesel? xD
That's useless, because the Diesel engines doesn't need it

Sorry I beg to differ. My 2.0 TDI a few years back use to spew oil into the intercooler like there was no tomorrow. Then suck the crap into the egr, shutoff valve and engine manifold. My shutoff valve cost 200 quid alone from TPS and that was cheap. From then on I swore a catch can was going on!
