Looks like an Oil breather pipe should be connected to it. possibly a PCV valve

it is a PCV/Breather, problem is it dumps smokey oil into the intake by the looks of it and coats the insides with oil, possibly including the Turbo viens.

Sorry I beg to differ. My 2.0 TDI a few years back use to spew oil into the intercooler like there was no tomorrow. Then suck the crap into the egr, shutoff valve and engine manifold. My shutoff valve cost 200 quid alone from TPS and that was cheap. From then on I swore a catch can was going on!
